Hey Guys, quick question. I installed my grab pole and step today. All went smooth until I was done and relocked my swing away tongue and cranked the winch to tighten the strap slack and realized the winch handle doesnt clear the winch step. Its off by a good 1/2″. It cranks right into it. What am I missing here? Is there a different handle for the winch with a greater offset? Am i suppose to bend it or is my step cut wrong? There is no more adjusting outwards. Also, there was no set bolt under the winch step to secure it to the pole. There is a welded nut there but I was missing the hardware. Im guessing its a stainless steel 1/4″ course thread bolt or hex setting screw? One last thing, are the two bolts to mount the fiberglass step really enough to keep it secure? I figure at least four would be needed. I have a 2012 Margay. Thanks Jay
Should clear? Hmm?
Did you remove your winch and install your step under it. I installed mine last year and it works ok, no clearance problem.Last edited by basscatpuma3 on May 2nd, 2013, 10:23 am, edited 1 time in total.
I had the same issue – I just bent the crank handle a little to clear. I suspect mine had been bent at some time and I hadnt noticed it until installing the pole/step.C.
Oh no, it definitely doesnt clear, Not even close. If I bend the handle out an inch I could make it work but I didnt want to do that if it was unnecessary. I havent seen any other solutions other than that. I did remove the winch and placed it in the the winch step then re-bolted it. There is no more adjustments as its pretty non adjustable. The winch bolts barley broke through the lock nuts now, is that adequate? I also thought as long as a few threads came out it was better. Since it didnt have a setting screw I was going to pick up longer bolts while I was there if needed. I know its the least of my problems as I cant tighten my winch now. Where do I go from here using bending the handle as a last option? Are all winch handles universal? I have the bare basic one that came with my Margay. basscatpuma3, which one do you have? Where do I go from here BassCat, what is your recommendation? Thank youJay
CygarbuffCan you post a picture? Might help with the trouble shooting.Mike
The factory will be on this one soon most likely.
I have mine on a Puma FTD, you shouldnt have to bend anything, they are made from the factory to fit, Let the factory look into this they will correct it.
Here is the picture. Its my first time posting a picture so I hope I did it right. The step measures 6 1/4 wide and as you can see Im about 5/8th – 3/4″ of an inch off. Basscatpuma3, did you have to bend yours that far? If I could put a bushing or spacer on the winch handle to give me more room I would but its not designed for that option and I not sure if that will affect the cranking torque if the handle if pushed out that far or bent that far. It seems all winch handles look the same and all close to the gear house so Im assuming it was designed like that for a reason. I had two installs yesterday, my 10ft signature series power pole and this, I never would have thought the Powerpole would have went smoother, but it did. Go figure. Thanks everyone. BassCat, any ideas? Will someone contact me or should I call the office and talk to Pete? ThanksJay
Jay, We will swap you for an F2 winch if that will help. Everything here has an F2 winch we have. BCB
