My opinion , for what its worth . — The gear engagement in most outboards is just a set of squared off ” male ” teeth that fit into corresponding ” female ” slots when you engage them . — My findings are that you should simply engage the gear with authority , instead of just easing it into gear . — This gets the male / female parts into position quickly , and keeps the edges of the male dogs sharp / square . — slow engagement lets them slide into place and round off the corners of the gear teeth , which will lead to eventual failure . — Of course , they all fail eventually , but this may help them last longer . — As said at the beginning of this post , simply my opinion . —————- Something else just came to mind , which is , how fast is your idle speed ?? — This can have an affect on engagement also . — BCB is spot on , as usual . — Take it to your mechanic , or check all of the adjustments yourself if youre able . — Hoss Last edited by BIGCATTER on July 23rd, 2014, 5:21 pm, edited 1 time in total.
