Hey guys, Im on my 3rd cat. Ive had a 89 PII, 07 Puma, and now have a 15 Puma FTD. We have quite a few Pumas and Cougars in our club and most of us have experienced the same problem. Just yesterday we had a club tournament and my boat bit running the creek and almost few me into the bank. My buddy has a Puma and his bit and turned him a complete 180 when trying to jump a wake. Same thing happened to me on Toledo earlier this year. A boat took a shortcut and cut in front of me. When I turned, the wake caught my nose and threw me for a 180. My 07 never bit and another buddys 08 has never done it, but I know of 7 instances in the past year or so where a newer model bit and either ran someone on the bank or three them for a 180. Any fix to this?
The fix to the problem is to realize the boat will do it as well. Not exclusive to BCB, but any other boat on the market. In addition, its also not exclusive to anything built after 07 or 08. It has more to do with placing a 250 hp engine on the transom. Dont jump waves, dont allow the bow to suddenly drop, and dont chop the throttle at rates of speeds. If you have a Hamby Beaching Bumper then the issue becomes more pronounced as the keel is a good 1″ – 2″ deeper in the water.
It seems strange to me that out of 50 members in our club, only the few of us with newer cats have had this happen in the past year. Not saying other boats wont bite and hook, but it seems like the newer Cats have a tendency to do this more. My new boat runs a lot different than my 07 did. It doesnt lift as much, which I hunk is why Ive had this happen to me twice now. Not trying to dog BCB, I love my boat! But just sharing my experiences and wondering if there is anything I can do to try and fix this problem.
Keep the hull on top of the waves!
Mine does this as well but my last 2 non-BCB boats did too. It may be more pronounced with the 18 hulls but I dont have this happen much except when the pleasure boats are out or extremely windy days.Purchased new 5/4/15Bass Cat Sabre Vision EliteMercury Pro XS 150MotorGuide 75lb Tour EditionHumminbird – Stock (will be changing soon I hope)
Sounds like driver error to me. If you run it too hard too low any boat in the world will do this. As far as lift what prop you running? Heavy load? How is it loaded? Hydraulic plate? Ive never had this problem personally just curiousLast edited by High Cotton on July 17th, 2016, 9:24 pm, edited 1 time in total.
High cotton is bittin off a mouth full as usual.
Im still new to my 2016 Puma FTD Hull, and I know exactly what youre talking about with biting. I think I unlocked this on Friday at Toho running in the high 70s. I know my boatreally likes to run flat, too much bow lift and she seems to chine walk a lot more. So when running straight I usually dont go much, if any, over half trim. Now when Im coming into a wake or a turn, I have found I need to trim up A LOT to get her sitting on the pad and slide around the turns, then I drop the nose to reaccelorate. Like I said, I as getting her to slide mid to high 70s and dropping to quickly accelerate back to over 80. Not an expert here, still need a lot of seat time with this hull to get her down pat, but those are my lessons learned so far.- Chaz
Its a simple phenomema- its simply an issue of what direction keel is headed vs what direction motor is headed and which has more effect. If the keel has more control than the motor youll hook and why you sense no control when it happens. Since there have been no keel changes on BCB 20er in years? And no increases in forward weight over keel that leaves motor and driver and prop to me?C.O.D. Jr. III
I have a lot of seat time in a cat. I put 400 hours on my last Puma and have already put 110 on my new one. This boat just handles a lot different than my 07 did. Like I said, its odd that out of 50 guys, only the few of us with new cats are experiencing this. I run a 25p fury and the boat is loaded down, but I put my lighter stuff up front. I do have an atlas plate too if that matters.
