Has anyone installed Hamby’s Light Keel Protector ?

I had ordered Dark Gray Keelshield but am thinking of returning it in favor of the Hambys Light Keel protector. The Hambys Light is 6 if length. Is it long enough for my Pantera IV? I know it is not what you asked, but I would recommend that you give serious thought to stepping up to the Original Hambys, with dealer installation. Ive run one on my BCB models for over 18 years, and have never had any issues or problems. I have seen the lighter, DIY units come loose, and that has the potential to be a pretty nasty situation. The light duty units will provide some protection, but for what you will save, Id sure consider the Original. Mike Whitten/Germantown, TN

MIKE is right on this one. Those light weight shields just dont stay on and protect as good. I once used a Keel Guard (brand name), put it on myself. looked really good and lasted about a year before it started coming apart. It separated from the backing that was attached to the boat and left a real mess. It was under warranty so I sent it back, what a mess getting the old guard off. I put the new one on and it also came apart after about a year. Do what Mike says, have the dealer put you on a Hambys, you wont regret it. Well worth the extra money.

Mike, I was considering DIY kit because I have never beached my boat but wanted something for the once a year, probably BassCat OI, use. Otherwise I really would not need one. So do they DIY kits come off just from running in the water? As for “nasty situation” can you elaborate? I sure dont want that to happen to me. Maybe I should not install a DIY keel guard? I never beached my last BassCat so maybe I really dont need it. Something to consider. Thanks for sharing. You may have saved me some grief. Flyswatter

The mess I was relating to was that the glue from the keel guard stuck to the bottom of the boat and the guard pealed off. It took me several hours of hard scrubbing with acetone to get that mess off. I dont beach my boat either except at Sam Rayburn because there are no docks. I would highly recommend that you get the Hambys, you wont regret it.

Thanks guys. Ill upgrade at a later date. My PIV is in no hurry since I do not beach my boat. If I am going to do this then Ill do it the way you have suggested. Flyswatter

Flyswatter, In addition to the effort you go to in order to prep the hull, and then have it start to come off, what really scares me is a situation where you are running, and the thing starts to let go from the bow, and peels back down the keel and gets in the prop. If it wraps just right, you could have some serious control issues–not to mention the very real possiblity of a snapped drive shaft. For a couple hundred bucks, Im just not willing to take that chance. Im looking for ways to eliminate problems in my boats, not create the potential for them. Get the original Tom. I watched Sherm install one on a new righ a month ago and the process is tedious to say the least. I would not want the home version. let the Delaer install that sucker. Go big or go home!
