I am sharing this with you all because it happened to me, I went to the Dr. in April of 2005 for a sinus infection and ended up learning I had prostate cancer. The sinus infection didnt have anything to do with the cancer. I had changed doctors and with a new doctor they always want to pull blood and do a full work up. We had walked in the house on May 15 and the phone was ringing, I answered it and my doctor told me my P.S.A. was high, P.S.A., first thing I thought was what the heck is P.S.A. she explained and from there I went to see a urologist on May 16,who did the wonder wave and told me there was nothing wrong, but we will do more blood work. He called me on May 19 and he didnt like the blood numbers on the blood work so he wanted to do a biospsy, so he did on the 20th and called me on the 25th with the results and you guessed it, his words to me were( son I hate to tell you but you have CANCER) I took it alot better than my wife, I had hoped and prayed for the best, but prepared for the worst, so it wasnt bad. After talking to the doctor he did a radical prosectmy and took my prostate out on June 6, and to this day I remain cancer free BECAUSE OF A GREAT Dr. AND EARLY DECTION I put the dates because on May 16 was our annversery and June 4th was my daughters 9th birthday. The worst time I had was bottoming out thinging about my daughter may not have a dad around to watch her grow up THAT WAS TOUGH I WROTE THIS BECAUSE THIS HAPPENED TO ME AT THE AGE OF 45 SO DONT THINK PROSTATE CANCER IS FOR OLD MEN, ALSO I HAD NO SYSTOMS TO GO ALONG WITH SIGNS OF PROSTATE TROUBLE HAVE YOU HAD YOUR P.S.A. CHECKED ITS ONLY A BLOOD TEST ASK FOR IT, IT MAY SAVE YOUR LIFE
Great news that you are cancer free!! You also have offered some very solid advice. Ive been having my PSA checked since I was 40. Im now 63. It will vary some, go up and down, but its very wise to have it done…probably once a year.
Thanks for the heads up…will get that added to the blood test at my next physical.Advantages are taken, not handed out…
Thanks for posting about this. I am currently going through the process as we speak. I have been having my psa checked yearly for about 5 years now. Well this year the doctors see an increase in my psa and refer me to a Urologist. I had the DRE performed in September and everything was fine, however, the Urologist wanted to do an ultrasound biopsy since there are places on the prostate he cannot examine during the DRE. I had the biopsy perfomed on December 2nd. I got a call from the Urologist last Thursday saying that there may be some pre cancerous cells showing up in the tissues from the right side of my prostate, but there is not enough tissue sample to be certain. So I get to have another biopsy in February. The waiting is the hard part, the wife is a little worried but I tell her if it is cancer it is in a very early stage. No tumors or cancer yet, and we are not even sure if the cells are cancerous. Get the psa performed yearly, the DRE and biopsy are uncomfortable, but bearable. I have to get this taken care of, I owe it to my wife and kids to get well, plus we have our yearly spring break trip to Amistad in March. We have been to Amistad at spring break for the last 20 years, I cant let a little prostate problem break our tradition.
Legggettr I will pray for the best for you. The one thing that helped me the most was accepting the fact that I had cancer. I looked at it like this they say all men if they live long enough will have prostate cancer, just so happened I had it a an early age. My biopsy also showed only 3 positive samples from all the clips he took. That was enough to convince me not to mess around at that point I did alot of reading on the internet and wanted the cancer out. I went to my Dr. this week and she was telling me that she knew a man that his Dr. had been watching his PSA for a few years because it was going up, the Dr. finally decided to look into a little closer and he should have looked alot earlier the news was not good the cancer had already breached. You can go on the internet and search prostate cancer and read all you want, thats what I did and my Dr was shocked when we went in to takl about surgery, he told me I did what most people dont do, and that is educate myself about it, and that most people cant or dont want to accept the fact of having cancer. There are so many options on surgery now that there is not much to is and recovery time is very little. Like I said the things that help me were to: READ,EDUCATE, PRAY FOR THE BEST BUT PREPARE FOR THE WORST EARLY DETECTION IS THE KEY TO BEATING AND REMAINING CANCER FREE DID YOU KNOW THAT THE PINK RIBBONS ARE FOR BREAST CANCER, AND THE LIGHT BLUE ONES ARE FOR PROSTATE. I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE MY CAT WRAPED IN BLUE AND PINK RIBBIONS AND HAVE ALL SUVIVIORS SIGH IT I THINK THAT WOULD BE NEAT!
Every year, sometimes every six months, with a full blood profile including lipids, metabolic panel, hemoglobin, and PSA panel. Thanks for the reminder, we all need to monitor these levels so we can detect problems early ! None of us are getting any younger. D.
Im the same way Doug – every 6 months full blood profile w/ PSA and annual DRE. I had my first colonoscopy at 43 for a benchmark. He found 3 polyps that were removed & said they would have been cancerous by 50. I get that done every 3 years as well now. Your health is nothing to take lightly. At 49 Ive been poked and prodded more than Id care to talk about – but I know Im in good shape. With as much sun as we get on the water – its a good idea to have regular checkups by a dermatologist – I figure I have 2 questionable spots removed each year – 3 have been cancerous. All came out clean. Im a believer in sunscreen….
I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in Jan 2008 at age 70. After considering the various options I chose the DaVinci surgery for prostate removal. This is an amazing robotic machine with 6 probes inserted in the abdomen and operated by a skilled surgeon at a console. This is much less invasive than a conventional radical surgery. Recovery time is dramatically quicker. I continue with PSA tests biannually to be certain no cells escaped. I highly recommend DaVinci. My surgery was in Memphis. If you have questions I will be happy to reply. Bill Hawkins
Good post. Im 37 and have had it checked twice just because I lost my dad to cancer at 59 so it scares the crap out of me. The 2nd time was scarry because it was way high for my age group……turns out I had a kidney stone. Early detection is the key and if caught, prostate cancer is very treatable.
