state and local police will be making a concerted effort to start enforcing trailer brake tag (inspection sticker) laws on ALL trailers in the state, including boats. while the law says they cannot pull you over just for checking for a current tag, they will begin asking for one when stopped for any other infraction while towing. local enforcement can also set up checkpoints at popular boat ramps. there is a memo being circulated amongst state police troops confirming this new push for trailer safety. one and two year brake tags are available for $10 or $20, respectively, with inspections of all lights (including clearance lights and turn signals), tires (treads and overall condition), fenders (covering entire tire), and safety chains (proper size and can they properly connect to tow vehicle). trailers with brakes will have them inspected, as well. fine for an expired tag, or no tag, is $200. they are not to be stuck on the trailer, but rather kept with the registration in the tow vehicle. in years past, enforcement has been lax, or nearly non-existing. thats now changing, so be prepared.Last edited by cajun catter on June 27th, 2013, 5:10 am, edited 1 time in total.
