Heard a rumor that Mercury is in trouble, (Brunswick to be exact). I understand they are trying to unload their boat companies LUND and TRITON, to stay afloat. Talk is that the SHO is kicking their caboose.Anybody else hear any scuttle on this topic.Doug
Not in any more trouble than some of the boat companies and certainly not due to Yamaha.

Yamahas are selling quite well, but to say they are going to get the #s Merc has is a joke, Rick told me that 93% or so of Bass Boats are Merc, yes merc is in trouble, they have been, no secret here in Wisconsin, when you buy up Every boat company, then a recession hits, then you have motor issues, Boom, Can you guys spell OMC!!!!!! I hope it doesnt happen, but they need to unload ALL of their boat lines and focus on pool tables and motors……Lund guys will Poop themselves when they can get Etecs and Yamahas……Brannon
Brannon that may be true on BCB but Merc has a miniscule outboard market share compared to Yamaha. Yamaha is the outboard king and the dealer network dwarfs Merc and E-tec overall.
Yamaha and Mercury share the lions portion of the market with a split of the market that is fairly close. The Yamaha engines are more popular in the saltwater, while Mercury is more dominant in the freshwater. Yamaha is taking this recession a little differently as the salt water market is in worse shape than the freshwater bass market that Mercury is more prevalent in. Though they both have their issues. The proposed sale of Triton has not been announced, and there are no detail of factual proportion at this time. There is a lot of smoke and we know there are embers there. Though no release has been forthcoming and we are better informed than most. Rest assured we know the full intent of any rumors should they occur as fact. We have been in this business for going on 40 years, and never has it been so tumultuous and topsy turvey. The alliances are changing, the failures have knocked out now over 50% of the bass competition we had, and it is not over yet. The next 12 months are going to be interesting with the developments. And for the Yamaha/Mercury comparisons, dont either loyalist be antagonizing the other, as there will be crow by many when this all shakes out. Some will be eating grey crow, and others black. BCB
Certainly had no intent of starting a hooha on this. I had just heard this from a Lund guy. I used to live in MN, and he seemed to be “in the know”. Thought I would throw it out here, as there are many on the boards who have a lot of contacts “in the business”. I have had both Merc, Yamaha, and yes even Honda. No bones to pick here, just thought it was interesting, and was wondering if anyone else had heard the same talk. BCB is always on top of the market trends, and I know there are Merc Pro team guys who prowl the boards, so just was wondering if there was any meat to the rumor. With the economy as it is, who knows what will happen next.
Im not sure if Merc Pro Guys prowl this board, but Evinrude Pro Guys do BCB and Bama I know that Yamaha has the Salt water market, Im pretty sure thats some what obvious, I like to get the Yamahammer Guys feathers Ruffled, which is EZ, just like us H.O. Guys……Any motor line that owns boats is probably in more trouble today than 8yrs ago,but thats obvious also, its ALL out of the consumers hands, ask the Champion guys…..
Brunswick/ Mercury Marine sells a lot of Alpha / Bravo I, II, & III outdrives.Old but proven technoloy. I have special tools that I bought 20 years ago and I can still work on the new drives.I dont recall seeing a Yamaha outdrive, and old OMC outdrive made me laugh.Mercury also makes props that most other companies use, no?If Mercury Marine is in $$$ trouble it is not due to Yamaha or BRB.
