Hey Guys, thinking the new helix 9 or a 999 for the bow of my margay to replace the 718 there now. I am looking for ideas on mounts that isnt a ram. I like the deck it or bbs type look up front as opposed to the single ram arm. I am wondering if the stock gimball mount that the graph will come with will be sturdy enough for big water. Anyway all ideas welcome.thanks much.
I have the 998 on the front of mine. You dont need anything more than what it comes with. Mount it down in the well so its low and out of your way. I really like the way mine is mounted. Im sure you can see it in one of the boat pictures on my profile.
Thanks, I did see your pictures and I prefer that look on the bow, I guess I was just worried about the weight of a 9 series unit and the factory gimbal mount. Nice looking Margay, and fish pictures.
This is a Balzout. Best bow mount you can buy.http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/BalZout_ … -BALZ.htmlI have one on my Margay.
I had a friend that had a Balzout for a while. He went back to a Ram mount, not sure what he did not like about it. I have no problems with my Ram mount at the bow, so it works fine for me. I am sure everyone has differing needs.Dan
I have the BalzOut on the bow of my Cougar as well. The stock gimbal mount that came with my Humminbird 998 has held up to Toledo Bend weather for a couple of years now. That being said, T&H Marine is also now making a mount for electronics that is supposed to be extremely sturdy. http://thmarine.com/th-marine-products/ … mount.htmlLast edited by toledobasser on October 2nd, 2015, 6:01 pm, edited 1 time in total.Jim EbarbMany, LA (Toledo Bend Lake)2004 Cougar/ 225 OptimaxHumminbird Helix 12 Chirp SI on BalzOut Mount at bowLowrance HDS 7 at bowHumminbird Helix 12 Mega SI on Ram Mount at ConsoleLowrance HDS 8 in dash at console
Thanksdefinitely looks like a sturdy mount but at $350 thats like 40 percent of the cost of the graph. I looked at the balzout and it is a really cool mount I think I prefer the look of the gimbal mount though tucked lower in the well. I am hopeful that the brightness of the new helix series will eliminate the need of elevating that graph high off the bow. Like I said my only concern on the gimbal it comes with is the durability of a 9 series graph on it. I am encouraged that the stock mount has held up on Toledo.
I had a 958 that was mounted on the gimbal mount in the well of a Cougar that held up just fine. It was factory mounted like that. I would think that if you mounted it well with large fender washers underneath, stainless bolts, and nyloc nuts that you will be fine.
Unless u have the access under the tm control good luck with the access to the underside. Even though I have a ram mount rather than cut a 3 or 4 inch hole in my boat I chose to use big stainless screws and a silicone adhesive for mounting . No problems to date.Last edited by Redngoo on October 4th, 2015, 6:06 pm, edited 1 time in total.2013 PANTERA 2MERCURY 200 PRO XSMINNKOTA 80LB FORTREX25 fury
It wasnt horribly rough today but it certainly wasnt the 2mph breeze that the weather channel said we had. I did this little video so you could see that the Humminbird 998 elevated on the BalzOut is pretty darned stable. The stock mount on my bird is metal so it is sturdy enough to hold up also. I have a Lowrance HDS 7 down in the recessed area that also has had no problem.
