I am going to Michigan the first week in May. The area I will be in in the St Clair area. Is there a member here that can give me some guidance or tips on fishing the area? I live in VA and fish southern lakes and rivers mostly. Any and all help will be appreciated
The area they refer as the “Miles Roads” will be on fire. Just look for the boats. The area is massive and depending on your timing and weather will dictate what depth youll fish. Many folks just fish tubes. Ive had a many 100 fish days. Its a shallow lake and just like a bowl. One thing for sure is you have to respect the weather. I about thought I was going to sink my boat last October. Wind changed direction in a heartbeat and had rollers coming over the bow. There are members on here who fish it routinely. Generally speaking tho that time of year is really easy fishing. You shouldnt have any problems having a good time.
Thank you very much for the help. Should I try to find a navionics sd card or does the lowrance cover the area enough. I am hoping to get there with enough prespawn time to get them shallow. Ive never fished up there so I dont even have a clue lol
If you have the Insight mapping youll be fine. On a weekend there will be a 100 boats out there. Just do what theyre doing. The smallmouth spawn all over that general area. My very first trip there I came back with bleeding thumbs.
It is simple once you have been there, just think of it as the streets running into the lake.they start roughly down by the mouth of the Detroit River and run all the way up the st.clair shore.an easy landmark is the 9 mile tower, which is the tallest building on that shore, and it is on the northern part of the mile roads.that whole shore is great, and as you fish it,just keep your eyes peeled for rock piles and boulders.easier to start a little deeper, and move in.tubes, jerkbait a,flukes and dropshot………you will have a bruise on your stomach from setting the hook all day!
Thank you both for all the help. I will have to let you know how I do. If you are ever in VA let me know Id love to help
Awesome lake , if its windy it gets nasty quick ! Starts shallow and doesnt ever really drop off, this time of year its wide open hang on you will get tired of catching smallies good !! Try an a-rig as well , odds are you will double up ! If you have any travel trouble im in southern ohio on the ohio river and know a few folks along your route if you need help holler . 740-981-9282
If I get my boat back from Sherms in time and I can work around my work schedule you can follow me out and run with me one day… I havent been out this year so dont have any specifics to where they are at in the Spawn but things should be taking off soon…Remember that spring is catch and release only up here… Try to get out during the week if you can to beat the crowds.. Bring setups for tubes, dropshot, Med diving cranks, Jerk Baits and whatever else you may want to try…I am going to play around with small swim baits more this year… We have a Sticky posting on the Michigan forum on bassboatcentral that lists good places to stay…Some good LSC anglers frequent that room and will be more than happy to give you some guidance.. No doubt St. Clair is a great fishery. However, if it was me going up to Michigan, Id go to any number of smaller lakes on up north a short distance. Fish are just as plentiful, maybe even bigger smallies. Not to mention you dont need to worry so much about the weather or the crowds. Just a thought. Ive been told that by several folks who live in the area of St. Clair. They seldom fish there, they go to the smaller inland lakes.
Unless someone has some super secret squirrel spot there isnt any place within 200 miles of St Clair that is in the same league that time of year…Up North on Burt and Mullet, Charlevoix, Grand Traverse Bay etc etc is awesome but they dont really take off until Late May and June.. To the original OP…If you go give me a shout and I will give you some Way points if I cant get out..
