Help, transducer removal

Boat is a 2013 Cougar AE. Console graph is Hummingbird 898c SI. The graph will operate in the manual mode but not auto. Means I have to keep messing with it to see the whole water column. Hummingbird customer service says they need the graph and transducer. The transducer cable runs through the splash well, out of the splashwell hole, behind the slidemaster, to the mount underneath the motor about midship. There doesnt appear to be room between the slidemaster and the hull to slide a peanut. Whats the best way to remove the transducer?

Take the wiring harness free at the back of the unit and separate the transducer wire. Pull disconnected end through the jackplate area from bow to stern. There should be enough room. Basscat can advise also

Have the head unit out and the plug disassembled.

If I am understanding you right it sounds like the transducer may have been installed before the jackplate. After looking at the clearance between my slidemaster and transom there does not appear to be enough clearance to pass the plug behind and especially to make the bend through the splash well hole. I would cut and scrap the transducer and install a new one to the side of the jackplate and not through the splash well.

Not an answer to your question…..but I would tell hummingbird to get it trouble shot with one of their transducers in house. Too much work to remove it to send it in. If its not a transducer problem then your not wasting your time and effort running cables. Good luck!

The 898 will operate fine, we believe, with a new transducer. Though in time we feel it will loose signal. To remove the transducer will damage the potting around the puck. We dont believe sending it will do anything other than them saying you have a bad transducer. Send the head unit in for a burn in test and checkup. Have them Reformat after heating it up and then reinstall. We think a different head unit would work fine on your transducer though it possibly does need one and we would suggest a new transducer.

Thanks fellows for the replies. Well get it figured out. There is actually two transducers. One shoot thru and an external sidescan. I was wondering how to remove the external without destroying it or removing the jackplate and motor. I believe the sidescan transducer is about a 200.- item. If it ends up being the dual beam thru hull transducer and I remove it, whats the best method to redress that area to prep for a new transducer?

Sand or grind that area and remount a new one in that spot.
