tire just came apart somehow. can see the metal belts, and it looks like a bald daytona 500 tire after 100 laps. cant believe it didnt go totally flat before my partner noticed the tire losing pressure and we wasted the rim.anyway, now i need help/advice on a couple of issues. (2002 sabre with single axle….original firestone firehawk tires P215/70R15)1. should i replace both tires ? the good one still has plenty of tread left, but is over ten years old now (garage kept out of sunlight, though).2. should i stay with passenger radials? what tire does BCB recommend now?3. should i balance tires? (i know this has been discussed before, but wondering what consensus was again)4. lastly, my (never used) spare had three indentations where the tire has been sitting on the metal bars of the trailer spare tire holder. the rims are slightly dented, too, along the same lines, although not bad enough to need replacement (i think). do i need to replace that tire, too? (could probably use my other good tire that still has a lot of tread left as my spare if necessary) 5. were those indentations caused by overtightening the spare onto trailer? i am considering welding a small metal plate to the bar to possibly spread out pressure on underside of spare….is that a bad idea?any and all recommendations are welcome. you know the old saying about what BOAT stands for….Bring On Another Thousand (as in dollars)… time to go tire shopping.
Cajun, went through this last year on a tandem axle deck boat. It was a 2002 also. Goodyear Marathons. Through attrition, I had to replace all the tires as they went bad one at a time back and forth to the lake/vacation. They just dont last forever even though the tread is good. My .02 and experience is replace them and have the piece of mind you will make the next trip without the chance of another blowout. You should be good for another 10 years.
I believe basscat at is using mastercraft avengers right now. and yes replace both!!! Yes balance your tires! That plate is good idea just round off the edges and corners.Last edited by scubaman154 on April 7th, 2013, 7:26 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Personally we wold replace one if they are not checked, professionally we would replace both.
Those tires are OLD! , as with anything, products will become brittle over time, even out of the sun! Do yourself a favor and replace them both. You were lucky you caught t before Thad a chance to destroy your fender!!
Yes Yes Yes Yes Dont tighten so tight, and put a bicycle type coated cable lock on the spare so it cant move anyway.
Cajun – Sorry about your trailer tire. Same happened to me, but it was my right rear truck tire. I was just past Lafayette at mile marker 130 on i-10 which as you know there is no place to go. Ended up getting a flatbed tow w/ my boat in tow to a tire shop in Baton Rouge. A 6 hour delay. Thank goodness for Boat US trailer program. I ended up getting two new rear tires and rotating my left rear to be the spare. Kicker was the truck tires were bought in Dec of 2011 and only had 19k miles on them. They were Toyo brand E rated tires. My spare was an 05 model and I didnt feel comfortable using it w/ my truck camper installed. My advice, use this as an opportunity to replace all your tires, especially if they are all 2002 models.

We still like Firestone tires and are using Cooper at this time on RWL Tires. The blakwall we are now using is a Trangle brand.

The blackwall we are now using is a Triangle brand.tire shop guy is recommending trailer tires, and said that bcb probably uses passenger tires due to desire by most for white lettering. are you using the triangle passenger radials, or are the blackwall triangle tires you speak of “trailer” tires ? thanks again for all the helpLast edited by cajun catter on April 8th, 2013, 10:10 pm, edited 1 time in total.
