Please follow this link and watch these two short videos of my trolling motor issue. 17 seconds and and 4 seconds. Turn your volume up a little bit. The slapping noise is driving me nuts and driving the fish away!http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=1653380695040 http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=1653376694940 I fish in water that is often very clear and our small lake gets a LOT of pressure. I try to be as quiet as possible but this trolling motor spooks fish like crazy. This is the second motorguide Ive owned that has done this. Ive taken the previous TM to an authorized repair shop but nothing he did helped. Can anyone suggest what is wrong with this thing or is this common? What can be done to fix this (replace it with a Minnkota? lol )This TM is about 1.5 years old and doesnt get bottomed out in shallow water. I take good care of my equipment. It shouldnt be this noisy. The video doesnt have the best audio but you should be able to hear the slapping sound. It is really annoying.Last edited by WTFletch on October 19th, 2010, 12:06 pm, edited 1 time in total.FISH ON!
That sounds like bracket noise and a small, or thin, rubber pad or shim under the head of the bracket may eliminate the wear from slop on the action.
I had the same problem with my MG and it would squeak and make all kinds of vibrations on any turn. So, I got some thin foam weather stripping that has adhesive on one side and put it on the end of the base where the trolling motor rests when deployed. Works out GREAT, no more noises and I can replace the weather stripping as it wears out! Simple fix!Last edited by SenkoSeis on October 19th, 2010, 2:49 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Thanks, Ill give it a shot.FISH ON!
I could not see your bracket, but on my 09 it came with the new graphite bracket that sounded like that.I replaced it with the original Gator Mount which solved that problem. The new bracket MG came out with sucks.
Duct tape.2-4 strips @ 3 inches long layered on top of each other at the end of the bracket base nearest the bow. Problem is slack between the lower base (attached to the deck) and the articulating arm that folds down into the bracket when deployed. You hit the button and the motor jumps up and down slightly, causing your noise. Several layers of duct tape will fix it. Have some pink, if you need to borrow some.
Mine does the exact same thing, and its 1 month old so wear is not the issue. And quite honestly it is really dang frustrating. I understand there may be ways to “fix” the problem with duct tape or 3m double sided tape but to me it is ridiculous that we should have to do this with a $1100.00 trolling motor. I also understand its not a BCB problem Mercury/motorguide should be the ones to correct this problem and it needs to be with a new mount, period! Every time it does this…which is a few hundred times a day when on the water…all i think about is i kinda wish i would have put a minnkota on it. The motor itself is great, but really disappointed in the noise from the bracket. Tape is not the answer MG needs to address this issue and replace the mounts…which will likely never happen. But in the mean time can one of yall post a pic of exactly where this tape needs to be so i can fish in peace. Agreed that this shouldnt be an issue. Will post a pic for you this PM. (If someone doesnt beat me to it.)
Kevin,Great to see you on the boards and helping a fellow BCB owner. I wanted to let you know that its truly appreciated and confirms that you are a class act. Good luck next year in the Elites. Ill be pulling for you!
See if this helps, guys. Probably start with 2 layers and add or subtract layers as needed.BTW, it works better if you use pink duct tape. http://www.facebook.com/p…805353&ref=fbx_album
