Okay guys I have a 2007 Puma with Merc 250 PRO XS, Detwiller Hyd Jack Plt, running a Trophy 27 and I have absolutely no hole shot when fuel tanks and livewells are full? I have tried everything possible and have had no luck. It just seems there is no power or torque as the boat just plows for nearly 50-75 yards before she winds up and gets up on pad. I have lost no top end speed, its all at low end. I was considering the new Mercury Fury Prop 3 blade 26 as it was suggested by a friend but thats a $$ gamble if it doesnt work. Any suggestions?? Thanks Keith
I doubt I can be of much help.. but I have your exact same set up 07 Puma 250XS, and I am running a 26 Trophy 4lblade and it seems to pop me up just fine.
Hey guys I forgot to mention the boat is a 2007 and I took delivery of it this past January and I never experienced this problem until about 4 months ago fishing a Tournament I blew 2 plugs out of the prop. Put new plugs (same size) back in and it has never been the same. The prop had all 4 in it, so I have been running with the same, just thought I would add this as it may help with the diagnostics… I was thinking it was maybe an engine issue but I am confused because again there has been no top end speed lost?? Thanks Keith
Maybe you thought you blew 2 plugs out and they werent there in the first place. I have never heard of blowing plugs out of the prop. They are hard enough to pull out yourself. I would try with the two plugs out if you havent already done so. Yes the Fury will help on the low end. Also dont lower the jack plate all the way to the bottom as it may cause minor dragging.
PHIL IS RIGHT ON BOTH.. MY JACKPLATE WAS TOO LOW……..ALSO FEWER PLUGS..
What have you done to adjust the hole shot? Have you removed the prop ring and piddled with the ventilation holes? We will be glad to help if we have some direction ourselves on this. And the Fury is going to be liked by a good many. It may give up a wee bit on top, though most will like the results. It will be less work and sacrifice some for about half the set ups. BCB
Phil , You know I never thought that maybe the prop only came with 2 plugs, I could ask the Pro-Staffer I purchased the boat from as I am certain he would know. Thanks for the help, and I will mess around a bit more this weekend. BCB, I have tried the jack plate in certain positions with no luck. No I have not messed the prop ring at all…. I will try removing 2 of the plugs and see if that corrects the problem and I will let you know. Once again BCB and the family comes though, BCB Rules !!!!! Thanks again Keith
The vent ring may require more hole PVS plugs. Then leaving the ring may necessitate removing the plugs. BCB
One key question I didnt see answered. What is it doing. Just bogging and plowing ahead before finally rolling over, or is the motor winding up but not getting any “grip” to push the hull over the hump? If the former, you probably need to remove the plugs. If the latter you might have the motor jacked too high. Usually the problem is one of bogging and removing the plugs will let the prop ventilate via exhaust gasses and get the motor up into its horsepower band..2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
Once the temperatures got hotter, I had to remove plugs even with the fury to get the best results. Ill probably have to put them back when the temperature drops this fall. Glynn
