The Lowrance 520c that came on my 08 Puma stopped working, so I replaced it with a Lowrance HD7, which I had installed on a bracket to the right of the console. This way I can view the screen from the front of the boat or from the drivers seat. This left a hole, however, in the dash about 4″X 6.” I also have a hole in the back of the boat where the old GPS receiver set (the HD7 has a built-in GPS). Anyone have suggestions on how to cover the hole in my dash and the holes left by the GPS receiver? When my mechanic installed the HD7, he told me that BCB made a cover for the hole. But now he says theyve stopped making it.
Would it hurt to leave the old 520C in the dash? For the rear antenna holes it depends on where they are. I was able to get some anti slip tape and cut it and put it over the holes for a anti slip foot step. I also made a copy of the tape pattern and placed it on the other side so it looked like it belonged that way. You might contact parts at BCB to see if there are other alternatives.
This might work. May be overkill. For some reason I cant post pics.http://www.carbonbydesign.com/proddetai … ar12120606
Dblplasabre, I saw my mechanic this afternoon, after reading your post. I asked him if hed come up with anything, and he told me that he was having the plates at your posted website sent to him. Evidently, someone had already suggested it to him. Thanks to your post, I knew what he was referring to. Hes going to cut one in a circle to cover the old GPS holes and a rectangular one to cover the hole in the dash. Then well get a logo of some sort from BCB and apply it to the one on the dash to dress it up. Thanks.
BCB has never made a hole cover for that area. Those were made by individuals who did them personally. We have not since we do not do plug in dashes with pre cut holes. But do you know how much a post with the title “Holes in boat” gets the attention of a boat guy? They all saw this one this afternoon! LOL! I wonder if you could get the BC logo that goes in the steering wheels. I think that would look slick.
Here is one fix I have done. Friend had a similar problem, built-in that went out, wanted to use something bigger and the Ram mount was the only option. We went down to the local hobby store and bought some 1/4″ model aircraft plywood. This is _not_ the same stuff you get at Lowes, etc. It is a bunch of layers of wood glued together, without voids, etc. So solid stuff. We cut one piece of this to _exactly_ fit the hole he wanted to fill. We cut another piece about 1/2″ larger all the way around. We then glued the two pieces together using polyester resin (which you can also get at the hobby store in the model airplane (the kind that actually fly) section. We now had a “plug” that would cover the hole and since the back piece fit the hole exactly, the cover could not slip around, which is what had happened to his first attempt at a fix. Next, depending on what is in your shop, take a router or sander and round/bevel the edges to give it a more professional look. Now take that same resin and paint the wood. And sand it. And paint it again. Do this 3-4 times and it will end up looking like a perfectly moulded piece of plastic made to fit that hole. Now you can paint it whatever color you want, and even put a logo decal on it if you want. Or if you have a couple of gauges or something you want to install, you can drill thru this plug and mount them in it. You can then use screws and angle brackets on the rear, so that you set the plug in the hole from the front, and then use the screws from the rear to let the angle bracket catch behind the dash and hold the thing in solidly. Be sure to re-resin any holes you drill to keep the water out. It is not as hard as it sounds, and will look like it is made into the dash when you finish.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
