My motor runs great, but Saturday I was out running fine 1992 Mercury XR6, in near mint condition. All of a sudden I could hear a faint slunk and it felt like the prop quit for a second, then it would pick right back up. Shut it down and checked, everything seemed ok. Was running later, got out of the throttle as the motor idled down I heard a noise in the motor and it was stuck in reverse. Cables are fine and linkage are fine, it seems to be in the drive shaft housing. When I move the control there is a click when I go from reverse to neutral and also when going from forward to neutral. Any idea what may have broke or slipped. Any help or advice would be help full and an idea what this could cost to repair. Finances are very tight, so Im hoping its something fairly inexpensive.
Thats probably bad news. My evinrude kinda did the same. It stuck in drive at one point. Later in the day while running fine I could here a slight knock while in gear. Turns out my gears were trashed. To have it re built is around three grand. I dont have the cash so I bought an after market complete lower from SEI. They come with a three year warranty. Mine will be here today so couldnt give a performance report yet. You might get lucky and just have a linkage problem but probably unlikely. Take the top screw(cap) off your lower. It should be located on the side of the lower near the top where it mounts up. There will also be one exactly like it located on the bottom of the lower. They are magnetic so if you have metal shavings, that could be bad. Some is normal. Next pull the lower one out and catch a little oil in a clar glass. If it seems shiny and the cap has more shavings you are most likely screwed. From there take it to a mechanic or like I did buy a manual and pull the hub. Its pretty easy and it will be obvious if it is done. Hope this helps.
The SEI lower was 974 with shipping.
You may be able to pick up a blown engine with good parts for $250-$400 if you put an advert out there. Sounds like a gear case to us, though thats a stab in the dark.
Yea sounds like your lower unit is about to go. call some Mercury person and get a list of lower units that will bolt up to your motor and start looking. Even though the noise sounds like its coming from the motor its probably your lower unit. Last edited by Bassdeer on June 18th, 2012, 8:12 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Its definetly the top end of the lower unit, like the shift lever has worn or something. Ive talked to the local Mercury guys and they think its something minor. The only part they dont understand is the tansom is in reverse, wont come out, and the thing will still turn over, even start. Anyone have any idea, one of them said the control box, but that doesnt explain being struck in reverse and the click on the top of the lower unit. Anyone ever heard anything like this. Looking for options, but figuring Ill have to look for a lower unit for part as its a 1992.
Great calls guys, you were right the lower unit was trashed. Fragments of metal all over.Ive gotten a new lower unit and the motor runs great. Ive found now that the control unit is shot. Have the lever, and face plate off, but can not figure out how to get the unit out. There is not enough room to feed it out the front the hull by the console with the wiring harness and other wires, as well where the carpet is tucked back in it takes enough space that I cant sneak it out. Any words of wisdom on how to get it out so I replace it with a side mount. Ive used numerous other words, but none were very wise or helpful, but did relieve some stress.I hope someone can give me some guidance.Chuck
