Topic: How to remove lower cowl on 2005 Mercury 225 EFI

Im trying to replace the trim motor and it looks like I have to split the lower cowl to remove the old wire and insert the new one. Appears to run through a grommet . I removed 2 capscrews on the rear of the cowl, and 1 in front, near the front latch. Dont see any more bolts. When I try to separate the 2 halves they move a little in the rear, but not much. Am I missing anything, or is it just that the cowl is stuck to the grommets, or the rubber piece in the rear where the “tattle-tell” is?

You should be able to fish it through the grommet though if you have to remove it there are small 5/16 heads and a Deep Well 1/4″ drive socket would reach those. You can see the depressions inthe clam shells for the bolts to go into.

No luck trying to pull it through the grommet. It has 3 wires running through it. Cant even pull the 2 wires from the trim motor a little, much less getting the 2 bullet connectors through it. Cant even touch the grommet due to all the wiring on the inside, and the bottom of the bottom cowl covers everything on the bottom. Do you think there are any more bolts holding the bottom cowl? I think my best route is to pull the bottom cowl so I can get to everything, then close it back up. Just dont want to crack the cowl if I missed a bolt.

There is a fourth we think under the cowling lower front half.

There is one in the front lower and one in the back. There is a plug in the side that allows you to get an extension and 5/16 to the bolt. If you havnt removed the old wiring, tie a string to the old before pulling it out of the grommet, a little vasolene on the sides of the wire and it will pull through. Got it. 2 in the back, inside the cowl, and 2 in the front, 1 inside and 1 outside. With the drivers side lower cowl off the trim motor replacement became a piece of cake. Plenty of room to route the 2 trim motor wires ( and the other 2 existing wires) through the grommet. Motor trims fine now. Thanks for all the help.
