Me and a friend have been having a discussion on what is the better motor Opti or HPDI. We both or looking to buy a boat more than likely they will be a newer used boat rather than a brand new boat. Just wanting to get some opinions on how other people rate these motors. Also we both have always had Motor Guides and we see a lot of boats with Minn Kota just looking for a little info on these also. Neither one of us has ever owned a Bass Cat but we know they are the best boats on the water.Last edited by chaneyd on July 30th, 2008, 1:00 am, edited 1 time in total.
That is funny EliteRanger…is that you Brannon? (I am only kidding) The simple answer is the best motor is the one you can get serviced locally. There are pros and cons to every one and it can be slanted about any direction one wants to slant it. My dealer can work on them all and I run the Merc…you see a lot more BCBs with Mercs and it seems the people who buy BCBs want Mercs. The guy who owns that dealership runs an Etec. Neither of us have had any problems with our motors. Get what makes you happy and go forward with the purchase. Judd Lasiter
I have 3 Basscats in a row all with MERCS 225/250 PRO XS,ALL WITH- 0 -PROBLEMS. Resale is better with these motors, preformance & fuel economy are also the best .
All around, they are both very good motors. The competition between engine manufacturers is so intense, they all strive to put out the best product they can. As Judd said, it will be up to you and what your mechanic prefers. If you have access to different service shops, that is a plus. If you get a Merc, and say the closest service center is 2-3 hrs away, but you have a Yamaha service center in your town or Evinrude(for the “EliteRanger”) down the street, I would look at what is convenient to you. Of course, that is an example situation. As far as MK vs MG…I ran MG on all of my bassboats since the 1980s…BUT, I also ran MK on my aluminum rigs as well. I put a MK on my “new to me” Eyra without hesitation. Again, both are good motors, depends on what type of fishing you do…grass/weeds/open water/etc. Good luck!96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
I too faced the same questions you are asking. If you do your research, I think you will find that Mercury gets much better fuel mileage than the HPDI. I searched the Yamaha web site and compared their fuel economy numbers to those posted by Mercury on their web site. Mercury wins hands down. Evinrude is a distant third, and from my experience, I would strongly recommend you stay away from Evinrude regardless. The resale value of your boat with Mercury is also a big plus. Mercury will be my motor of choice now, and in the future. Good luck on your boat buying experience.
Dude why am I being borught up in this question??? I am not the only guy that prefers the E-tec ho on a BCB hull, its funny how when we were all together at the dealer meeting and the expressions on your guys faces after driving the Pantera 2, 20 footers, etc…..boy things sure change when you guys are around the BLACK MOTOR ONLY CROWD……HUH?????Your Signature …

Did you even read my post? I thought it was you stirring the pot, Lord knows you have never done that I never have been impressed with the Etec, even at the dealer meeting…it is an ok motor that is my opinion and some like it which is fine. They were 2 years to late with a 250 HO and we both know the reason for that. To each their own and I think have definitely improved them…but I am still going to run the baddest one and that being a Merc JL
i didnt know i would start such a stir that post has been up for a while. But honeslty, who knows about the verado? I have the opportunity to take over payments on a P2 with a verado but i have no friends that have one. I just know what i have read on the internet. Who has owned one? The pros and cons. Thanks.
