Question on factory installed Huminbird and SI units. The huminbirds are supposed to have in line 3 amp fuses, where are they located?I am adding a bow 998 SI unit along side the existing 958 and was going to use the existing Lowrance 1400 power supply. Any problems with this? Should I add a in line 3A fuse or is it already protected somewhere else?I have a couple addtional questions, but lets start with these.Thanks for your help!

BCB does not install in line fuses as they have proven to be more problems than not having them.

So does that mean there is no voltage spike protection on these high dollar units?

Tnbigdaddy,We have had no issues from voltage spikes on units we know of. And more problems from weak voltage of poor connections and fuse holders. There is a 20 amp on the main line and an in line to the engine.

Thank you for the explanation. Will install the 998 without an inline fuse. On a typical factory bow installation of the Lowrance 1400 and the Humminbird 958 are the power wires run separately or are they spliced into one power wire? I am planning on using the power wire from the 1400 to run the added 998 and want to prevent any voltage drops on either of the 958 or 998 that will be on the bow. I can not get a good enough view in the bow compartment to see exactly what wires are run where. Note to self and future installers – tape up the edges of the holes in fiberglass before sticking arm in it, I am itching to death today!

Since you seem to be very concerned with voltages at the unit here is our explanation or example.If this is an older pre 2010 model we would run a separate power lead from the main terminal block on the transom through the sump are in the hull and go separate. The units are Y connected into the existing harness, and over time deteriorating connections of the corrosion on wiring and connectors has led to voltage drops and V current issues. BCB

The boat is a 2010 Puma FTD. I am good with the voltage spike explanation previously given. My concern now is to make sure I have enough power going to the 998 and 958 as they can have degraded performance, if any at all on low voltage connections. I can run wires down the bilge directly to the batteries if needed, but wanted to make things as simple as possible by re-using existing power supplies if they can effectively operate the unit.

FYI – I have the 998 at console. It has problems freezing up toward end of day. HB told me sounds like a voltage problem since toward end of day and to run cable directly to battery with in-line fuse. I did that and its still freezing up. Now they say to use the square style fuse instead of the tube style as the square one doesnt let as much voltage drop through it. So Ill try the square style fuse and see if that helps.

I thought I had a navionics premium south chip in it but when I just looked it was not in there. So I had no chip at all. I had taken it out when I upgraded the software and forgot to put it back in.So to answer your question – no…no chip.

The tube style fuse holders are chronically prone to breaking the circuit in rough water or bumps since the fuse is being held in place by a spring… I have removed several from my friends boats and they have never had an issue since.JP
