OK, I posted the questions last night about interferance in the side scan (not the down scan) screen of the 797 when mounted on the bow troll motor. BASS CAT came back fast as ussual, thanks and what they recommended worked to a degree, but Motorguide recommended against it. That may cause a ground path through the trolling motor or the big motor that could cause damage to the internals. Turns out, the motorguide motors are designed to avoid interferance in the 83 and 200mhz range, which is where the fishfinders operate. The side scan operates in the 450 range, which motorguide does not address, hence the interferance. The interferance goes away at high bypass, because the digital speed control is out of the loop. Motorguide recommended making sure the boat is properly grounded, by running a jumper from the neg post of the trolling motor battery (the neg cable going to the trolling motor) and the cranking battery neg post. Then add a “RF choke” (thats the magnet thingy that is on some computer monitorss and battery chargers) to the power wire to the 797. My radio shop man said to put one on the positive AND neg wire going to the 797. They need to be 5 wraps and can be had at radio shack. Another interesting thing that Motorguide told me, to make SURE that the plug is unplugged or the foot pedal switch is off when ever you charge the batteries, or if you have an onboard (batteries charged with the big motor. seems the high amp draw can damage the digital part of the motor. Will post the result of adding the RF Chokes. Milton 2004 cougar 225 opti
You might also try over at the yahoo group, this same problem has came up several times. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sideimaging/
Thanks for sharing Milton and good luck. Please do let us know how that goes. Judd Lasiter
OK, Radio shack fix didnt work. Found this from the link above. RE: [sideimaging] Minkota Interference You need to call our Customer Service department at 800.633.1468. Tell them your exact setup and they will get you the appropriate Interference kit. “This noise is coming from the Maximizer that is used in both Minn Kota and MotorGuide. Eddie@Humminbird” On hold now at humminbird. Milton
We have no true fix short of grounding, isolating and shielding. The magnetic field oscilating around the trolling motor head is effecting the transducer and feeding into the signal. We have run those that are irrepairable. On those we found the issue, we simply coasted to use the side finder. Not what you want to hear, though converse with HumminBird more.
I did speak to motorguide, they admitted a problem and do have a fix they are not ready to release yet. pretty frustrating. I refuse to mount the transducer on the on the transom that would require driulling holes in the hull. MKG
I put my original SI on the trolling motor, when I got a second unit I put the transducer on the jackplate – no holes in hull. The side imaging works so much better on the transom due to the boat speed is in the best range, 2-6 mph for side imaging, that now I hardly use the si on the trolling motor. I have one on the front and one on the console, I idle with the big motor and find the spot, then go up front. Mike
Mike is accurate in the jack plate mount for the transducer and have mounted many there. BCB
STEELER Have you installed the nickel cad transdeucer,or is it the one that came with unit? h bird has also come out with a in line filter, and different choke collars. I have both here for mine but have not installed yet. GREG
We have tried them and thye do help some, though not a total fix on those that have interference.
