It is out understanding that you can select the Navionics chip in the un it itself. Try the menus and see if you have that option. We will look into it as well. BCB
I think perhaps you misunderstood the comments. There is no problem getting the Nav hot maps which is preloaded in the NVB its trying to get the uni maps on all the other lacks not listed on Hot Maps. Maybe I dont understand post. Im pretty familiar with the 997C and its a great product except for that. Imagine paying over $2000 and finding you have no map for 90% of lakes you fish. I am again only advising folks that may want to pucrchase this to maybe consider buying the basic umit and then buying a seperat ship for thier region. That way if the hot maps dont show thier fishing waters they at least have a minimuil map to know where they are. By the way a whole lot of other people are finding out about this and not to happy. Yo can call HB and now they will tell what I have mentioned is correct. Lefty
Lefty, we will go past the service dept. to get the answer. Though we know what our understanding is and that we have a few folks using the Navionics Premium card. We will have to do some research on this and all we know is what the engineers that attended the dealer meeting informed us of then. They were the ones who built the unit so we will dig further and if we learn something else, we will let you know. BCB
Very few probably realize this……..even the boat OEMs as they dont specialize in this. Good info if this is truely the case. If I understand you correctly either you use the bundle which has a limited number of maps or you choose uni maps which has most, but no detail. You cant have both. Im not sure if Lowrance is the same way or not. I feel pretty certain that Lowrance units are not this way since I was showing the unit to a guy from Iowa and he was telling me where he liked to fish. It was a very small body of water and was able to scroll right to it. This was on a Lowrance X28. However, as much as these things cost you would almost expect them to tell you when you have to go to the bathroom!
Correct in one point Phil, that you can not use both at the same time. Though you can select which to use in the menus. You can select this option in the unit. BCB
I am no humminbird rep but why in the world would you buy a unit that doesnt have the lakes you fish on the card/package you bought and expect some sort of representation on the device? Why not buy another card that has those lakes and move on. I have both navionics and lowrances cards for just this reason. Maybe I dont understand you but- You bought a unit that had preinstalled premium hotmaps- which work just fine You fish lakes that you knew werent included in those maps. You assumed youd have some background uni maps to fall back on when you got off the premium hotmaps lakes. The Arkansas River is hardly on the lowrance cards but I still mark my trails and spots- where the screen is blank I worked off a mapless system with a garmin 12XL gps for years- saved my trails and spots and it worked fine. Heck if I hadnt left my cardoor open in Russellville Id still use it…. I just dont see why this is such a fuss.C.O.D. Jr. III
Ward, What people are not understanding is that if the map you fish is NOT included in the bundle on the NVB package (which includes Navionics Gold and Hotmaps Premium with 2006 maps) – most would assume as you do – simply go buy the new SD or CF card for 07 or 08 that now DOES HAVE the lake you want to fish included. What people are finding out is that the new cards are not working in conjunction with the preloaded 06 maps in the NVB units – and the unimaps are not working either. What they get is a large yellow screen showing nothing with just their boat. So they are being forced to buy the unit that costs $200 more than the combo units by BCB and are then only to find that even spending ANOTHER $200 for the new Hotmaps 07 or 08 editions they still cannot get the mapping to work on the unit. My belief is that this is a fairly new isue to BC and they were only going on the info they had been given by HB – which to be honest when you think about it – spending $2k on a unit in late 07 or early 08 – only to find it has the 2006 maps installed…thats not right in my book. This is an ongoing topic of discussion in the yahoo side-imaging group. We have an email into both HB reps on the board and just waiting to hear back… BC will not sell the basic combo units from what I understand where you could save the $200 on the HB unit and then spend that $200 on the map card for the region you tend to fish the most and circumvent this appearent software compatability issue…maybe this will change when they further investigate the issue with HB…??? I hope some decision is made soon – I order my boat in a week and Id rather not spend $2k on a unit that only will lead to headaches due to unresolved issues with the software on these units and new map cards. My 2 cents – take it for what its worth… Halls
ohhhhhhh now I understand. houston we have a BIG problem up here. hey PA, glad I didnt get the bird.C.O.D. Jr. III
I bought my 981CSI about two years ago with the understanding that I was getting a GPS unit that I could load maps onto . Not being real smart and understanding all about the 981C I spent about $1700.00 on a unit that does have the GPS but can not load maps on it and it just shows the boat on the screen . If there is something that I can do or something I am doing wrong please help . I guess I was a little embarassed until now about saying something . Its a great unit just cant use it like I hoped to.
Folks Im putting this on just to make sure my BCB friends, owners or purchasers are aware of a seriouse problem in my opinon with the above mentioned unit that folks are just fneding out about. Some folks may except this as the other aspects of the unit are good. So you 85% if thats OK. Humminbirds side imaging is great, however purchase the upgrade unit with knowledge that you will not be able to upgrade to newer maps. More important is that you will not have the ability to use the basic uni maps that come with the system. This means on the majority of fishing lakes and rivers you will have no info where you are other than a yellow page with a picture of your boat and a line showing which way you are going. Not even the basic outline of the body of water you are fishing. This can be a saftey issue. You will be paying a lot of money for a GPS that is extremily limited as to where it can be used. This was the result of Humminbird not engineering the internal board so that you could use both maps. And it can be engineered that way.You will not find any of this on their Web site as they are pushing the more expensive NVB, only by calling them will they varify the above. My only purpose is letting you know up front so you can make an intelligent choice. Proceed with your purchase knowing this.Lefty
We dont know that a 997 is compatible to DI?
Sounds like youll need more help and probably from Bird.
Humminbird sent me the card to install……
We suspect that you have not updated your units in a while and often they require the updates prior to accept the latest updates. We would buzz HumminBird next week and get their answer.
Ensure that the settings are proper. The update sometimes reverts the settings to factory settings. Make sure that the correct transducer is selected and see if that helps. It can be frustrating dealing with the quirks that the programming team uses for Humminbird. Ive used the Humminbirds to demonstrate what not to do when creating an interface for people when Im teaching the Human Machine Interface course. I can see why so many people are going with other manufacturers of fish finders.Good luck and please post the fix for your issue.Practice Angling CPRCatchPictureRelease2010 PIV 200SHO
