just got a HB 899 and trying to determine best transducer location on my 94 P2. tried mounting to the jackplate and did well till you exceed 5 mph, then looses everything. If I attach it to the transom 15″ to the right of the motor, it will put me over the trailer bunks. any suggestions before I start drilling? Another question is concerning the trailerbunks. When I bought the boat the bunks had been replaced. however, I feel that the long inner boards are too short. I measured them out a 10. this thing is a bear to get loaded on the trailer and wants to go off to the side before you get to the winch stand. Seems like they could use another 8 – 10″. ThanksJim

I assume that when you say you lose signal at speed that you are referring to 2d, as SI/DI are only meant to image at very low (idle) speed. You are best to leave the SI transducer as is and add a second 2d transducer into the bilge area. This would get epoxied in and would give you your high speed 2d imaging. You would also have to install a y cable along with it. This is the set up in most bass boats.

Agree with catdude on this one . — Transom mount transducers RARELY will read at anything over idle speed with any kind of accuracy . — As for the bunk length , it sounds to me like youre backing in too deep . — If you have a single axle trailer , try backing in until you have about 2 inches of fender sticking out of the water . — This changes of course , with the ramp angle , but seems like a good all around starting point . — Just experiment a little with depth , and it will load a lot easier . — Hoss

Are you talking about the boat wanting to go off the side of the trailer? Like over the wheel wells? Or the bow of the boat wanting to go to the side of the roller? Most likely backing in too deep if its going off the side of the trailer. Otherwise, what prop are you running? With my 4 blade Trophy, I have a hard time getting my Cougar all the way up to the roller without backing the trailer in to the point that my truck tires are in the water. I fish by myself most of the time and backing that far in is fine in the summer when I can wade in the water, but its not much fun in the colder months. It is not the length, it is the location that matters. We cant know the location of your bunks or width.
