Ok, Im trying to get 2 units set up on the bow my Sabre FTD and having some trouble…At the bow I want to use an 898 for sonar (it will eventually have a 360 added to it as well) and I want to use an 858 for mapping only. I have the 898 hooked up to its SI transducer on the trolling motor and sharing the GPS puck (via Humminbirds 2 unit/1 puck adaptor cable). I have the 858 hooked up only to the GPS puck and then connected via ethernet cable to a second 898 at the console. The 898 at the bow seems to be working fine (only fired it up in the garage, havent headed out to the lake yet) but the 858 only shows the “PC Connect” screen when I turn it on. I have “Sonar Off” set in the menu. I cant click through “View” or have anything happen with the quick keys. In summary my setup is…Bow:898: transducer on trolling motor; shared GPS puck858: shared GPS puck, no transducer, ethernet to console 898Console:898: ethernet to bow 858So what am I missing? Do I have to have a transducer hooked up to the 858?Moving on to replacing my Power Pole pump while I wait for the wisdom of the forum to set me straight…lol2011 Sabre FTD w/ Mercury 150 Pro XS, Power Pole Sportsman 2s, Humminbird 898 w/ 360 and 858 at bow, 898 at ConsoleFor lots of BCB love, follow me on instagram: @professorbeard
My first question is the ethernet cable. Not knowing what cable you have, you generally cant use an ethernet cable to connect two devices directly, you have to go through a hub. The simple explanation is that you have a wire that carries data out of one unit. It needs to be “crossed” so that it is connected to the data input on the other device. A straight-through ethernet cable wont fly, just like you cant connect two computers like that. The hub in the center handles all of that.Just a guess not knowing exactly what you have.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
No, you can definitely connect two units with only an ethernet cable, Ive had the 858 and console 898 set up like that for awhile now. The hub is only if you want to connect more than 2 units. So if I want to share waypoints between all 3, Ill have to add an ethernet hub. But using one for sonar and the other for mapping, I should be good as is.I think I have it figured out. Connected the transducer thinking that might be it, and then figured out that I also had to re-choose the GPS puck. No time to get it out on the water today, but I think that did the trick…at least for the time being. Would rather not have to have a transducer connected, but since I got it working, Im not going to mess with it for the time being…lol! I suppose I could always get a transducer splitter cable. Side note: the only complaint I have about my Sabre FTD is the access hatch to the bilge. Being 64″ its a nightmare to work down in there….lol. But I got the replacement PP pump installed, so hopefully I wont have to deal with it for awhile…2011 Sabre FTD w/ Mercury 150 Pro XS, Power Pole Sportsman 2s, Humminbird 898 w/ 360 and 858 at bow, 898 at ConsoleFor lots of BCB love, follow me on instagram: @professorbeard
On my classic I wish the lid opened to the back. It doesnt lay flat when open, and there is not much room to work around it, particularly picking up 70+ pound batteries.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
How are the 2 bow units mounted? I would like to see. I have thought about doing this myself.
Heres a pic…using 2 of the medium size Ram mounts…its a tight fit because of my little Power Pole button riser, but I think itll work. Just have to be a bit careful deploying/stowing the trolling motor as the cable wants to grab the port side unit… 2011 Sabre FTD w/ Mercury 150 Pro XS, Power Pole Sportsman 2s, Humminbird 898 w/ 360 and 858 at bow, 898 at ConsoleFor lots of BCB love, follow me on instagram: @professorbeard
