Humminbird side imager on a P4, go with the 997, or the 797?

Pocketbook says go with the 797. Ego side of brain and eyes say go with the 997. Anyone used both? Is the 797 easy enough to see both the map and the SI sonar in a split screen? Im wondering as far as mounting in a P4 (2003 Pantera IV) dash goes, if the 997 will fit in the hole I currently have in the dash with a Lowrance X-15 MT in it, or if I will have to modify the dash? If I have to RAM mount it or some such thing anyway, maybe the 797 would be better? Also, where would be the best place for me to mount a SI transducer on the transom? Thanks for any info.

Ive got the earlier version, the 987si and 981si, I would definitely go with the 997 vs. the 797. The screen size will be much better for reading what is actually there. I mounted the transducer on the jackplate, you need to have the big one up from the water when you are on plane, it seems like most people are getting the switch to go from the thru hull to the si transducer at will. I put my unit on a ram mount on the handrail next to the dash. Whichever one you get you will love the side imaging. Mike

Thanks for the response Mike. I got some email responses back from friends too, they all say spring for the 997 as well. How big of a pain is it going to be to mount it? Does it do GPS from the unit, or does it have a puck on the deck like my Lowrance? Anyone know if it will fit in the dash of a P4? thanks again.

MossBoss, you will be pleased with either unit. Mounting will be up to you as to how and your preference. BCB

MossBoss, mounting on the the jackplate was easy as was mounting the ram rail mount on the dash end of the handrail. The GPS is a separate piece, so youll need to put it somewhere as well. Search Yahoo groups and you can find the Humminbird group with tons of mounting solutions. Mike

great unit. I have a bow and concil mounted. Only problem is they do not work at all on plane so you wont know your true depth on either at speed. Shallow water nightmare

997 best bet, also get the switch and puck for thru hull and switch when running- works just fine!!BAYOU BANDIT

The switch is no longer need, HB came out with a cable that makes the split for you. Its only 20 bucks compared to the 80 bucks for the switch. http://www.jandhproducts.com/_e/Humminb … SIDB_Y.htm I have a 797, and do not regret not buying the larger unit. One advantage to them is that you can set it to look left or right or both. By looking only one direction that will make the improve the view. floridaj, We have told HumminBird that they do not have enough segmentation for Florida fishing, which means they need more smaller scale definition. Is this your issue? We really need to confirm that to keep improving the product and we have a really great relationship with HumminBird. BCB
