Humminbird speedo GPS link.. New guy here

Hello I am new to the board and just purchased an 09 Puma FTD and love it!! In fact I left Ranger for BassCat and have not looked back. My question is, can the Humminbird GPS speed be linked to the smart gauges like the Lowrance units? My speedo in intermittent and I have a Humminbird 787C. My dealer does not know how to do it on the Humminbirds but will do it if it is possible and he gets the instructions. Anyone? Thanks in advance, GB

It will require a Com Link cable and it can be done. You will have to turn on the output in your HumminBird and as long as you do not rest the unit it will retain the output setting. Though if you disconnect it, you will have to reset the output. We are working with HB for the right directions and any issues. Seems there has been a myriad of opinion on this and we want the proper set up. Monday Service should be able to help your dealer. BCB

It would be nice to have a method to hook it up via link cable versus running wire back to the NMEA output pigtail on the GPS puck. Ill wait for HB input on the preferred way.

My dealer just finished the hook up and it works great. The analog needle still works the same as always but the improvement is in the digital side. I now have an accurate accurate MPH readout, heading, and and waypoint distance on my smart craft gauge digital readout. Very impressive and very useful. According to my dealer he did not use the com link cable and wired it per Humminbirds directions.

You may need the com link cable if you interlink share your Humminbirds waypoints. I had to have Com Link cable for my Humminbirds to Share waypoints and split the GPS feed for Command Link (Yamahas digital gauges) to work correctly. However, it may be different setups Mercs and Hammers with GPS data routing and digital gauges. Are you using interlink box to share two humminbirds on your boat? Glad to see you got this working. I know I experienced similar challenges with my PIV. I am up and running great now. Flyswatter

Preferred method is to use the AS-Syslink cable which splits the GPS signal for two units. One side of the Y has four prongs, this goes to the HBird dash unit. The second side has a three prong connector, which needs to be cut off. The green wire is the NMEA positive, the bare wire is the NMEA ground – connect these to your smartcraft gauge NMEA input wires. The other method is to run a wire back to the pigtail at the puck and make the connection. No settings need to be changed on the HBird unit- when it powers the GPS puck- it will start sending data to your SC gauges.
