2012 Cougar Adv. Elite. 898 SI bow with Minn Kota universal in TM. 998 SI Dash Mounted with standard in-hull and SI transducers. Everything has been factory installed.Ive been trouble shooting inconsistent depth reading on my 998. HBird recommended I bypass the Y-cable and plug the SI external transducer into the back of the unit. I was surprised by the quality of the 2-D image. It is far superior to the current 2-D Im getting from my in- hull transducer. The problem, is now there is no depth reading at speed. I decided to install the HBird Transducer Switch to provide the excellent quality of the external transducer at low speeds, w/o giving up depth reading at high speed. My questions: What is the best way to tap into the boats power supply without introducing interference, and providing the 3 amp fuse protection recommended for the switch? Will the transducer function flip back and forth when the switch is moved, or do I also have to select the different transducers from the transducer select tab under the sonar menu on the 998? Im hoping I can activate the transducers once, then use the switch as I plane off to read depth at speed. My rig may be unique, but if you would like a better image for the conventional sonar, you need to at least try to bypass the y cable and plug the external transducer right into the back of the unit. It seems more crisp when you dont have to shoot through the hull.
