It looks like Gustav is headed right for my neighborhood. I cant do anything about all the trees and limbs around my house but I got the BassCat and truck under the carport. I managed to get some final fishing in yesterday before I started preparations. Im not evacuating. I might get activated in the aftermath like I was after Katrina. All Louisiana State Law Enforcement Officers living North of I-10 have already been activated. All us living below I-10 will be allowed to take care of our immediate needs at home and then we will be called in. The last time we had a hurricane as bad as this one is projected – Hurricane Andrew in 92 – it destroyed the fishing in the Atchafalaya Basin and surrounding waters for years to come. Andrew was as bad as a hurricane gets. I was 15 miles (northeast side) from the eye of that one when I lived in Florida, and if I were you, I would evacuate. If youre going to stay, send your loved ones further inland. All the family (except my parents and brothers and sisters) still live in New Orleans. After Katrina, we had to move my grandmother to a nursing home here in Georgia. She is now 98 years old and still wants to know when were going to take her home to New Orleans. Be safe and god bless. The fishing will return even if it does take a while. You need to take care of yourself right now. I understand if you were to leave you may have to immediately return to assist, but at least you will be alive to make the return. Im sure it goes unsaid most of the time, but we appreciate your dedication to law enforcement and service of the public. I lived in Lafayette in the late 1970s-early 1980 and in Houston from 1980-88. We saw several bad storms come through and were lucky and blessed enough to have not had any major damage. Our prayers are with you and all my Cajun brothers and sisters to come through this with a minimal amount of heartache. God bless you all.
