I found out my heat exchanger is cracked on my furnace. Am I better off replacing the heat exchanger or replacing furnace? If I replace the heat exchanger is this just putting a bandaid on a bigger problem?

the heat exchanger is the most expensive part of the furnace. hate to say it but better buck up for new one

If you can get a new one before 12/31 you may be able to take up to a $1500 tax credit courtesy of Uncle Sam when you file your fed return. Something to consider.

I feel your pain. We just shelled out about 4500 for a new one. We got an Amana with a lifetime warranty on heat exchanger and compressor. Good luck!

Thanks guys for all the info.We decided to replace both the furnace and a/c at the same time.We needed to do this before the new year to get the tax break.I think we are going to swap out the hot water heater also to get better efficiency.It looks like I wont be getting into a new boat any time soon.

Also, those colors are screaming hot cool too. Sorry to hear of the house hold challenges but like everything else there is a diminishing return with all materials. Just geter done before 12/31. Hope you make it to the OI.

If youre going to replace the furnace make sure that the furnace you buy qualifies for the tax rebate. I also found out that the rebate isnt all what its cut out to be. The amount you get in the rebate also depends on how much your household grosses a year the more you make the less you get. The furnace that qualifies Im willing to bet it will be the high end furnace that will probably cost you thousands more. Money better used buying fishing tackle and new depth finders
