First off, this is not the famed fisherman Charlie Campbell. I didnt want to scare anyone who might know THAT Charlie. Charlie Campbell was my grandfather. He passed away last Thursday at the age of 92 after complications from a stroke some months ago. The services were held in Marshall, AR, and he was laid to rest in Witts Springs, AR where he and my Grandmother lived most of their lives. First off, let me say that after the last several months, this was really a blessing more than anything. After the stroke, my grandfathers quality of life was pretty much non existent. He was wheel chair bound and almost non responsive. I KNOW hes much happier now than what he has been of late, so that gives the family a sense of relief. My grandfather was a farmer, and that has lead to many farmers down the line. Each son, and each grandson with the exception of me still farm to this day. (And Im working my way back to that) So as you can imagine, as a kid, I didnt do much fishing as there was ALWAYS farm work to be done. However, those trips to my grandfathers house in Witts Springs were some of the best fishing trips I have ever had. He had a HUGE pond down the hill from his house on the farm where myself and 2 of my cousins spent many hours just being boys when we would spend time there. Usually it was for Bible School in the summer. We usually caught Bluegill and Sunfish that were bigger than a grown mans hand. I still can not believe the size of those pannies. We didnt know much about bass fishing at that time, but we did catch a few while panfishing. We started catching bigger and bigger bass, so we decided to try to target them. That next summer, I caught the biggest fish of my life, still to this day. An 8 LB largmouth. Funny thing was I caught it on a little minnow looking plastic bait. I guess I had the swimbait thing figured out back then. My cousins and I ran across the field and stopped my grandfather on the tractor to show him the fish. One thing about my grandfather is he really knew how to make someone feel good. He really made a big deal of it (even though he wasnt the least bit interested in fishing). I just wanted to share this little story with you, as some of you knew of my grandfathers passing. Thank you very much.
