Is anyone running the Optima blue top battery in a Puma or Cougar. Ive done some research and it looks like the batteries range in weight from 38.5 lbs. to 60 lbs. depending on cold cranking amps. Standard batteries weigh about 75 lbs. Im running four batteries in the back and Im thinking I might be able to lighten up the rear by 100+ lbs. Also, the max. cold cranking on the blue top is 900 and I think the Mercury 250 Pro XS needs 1000. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!
I have 4 OPTIMAS in my FTD. Best Ive ever used , never have run down. Really do not know which is used for cranking , dealer installed what was needed- well worth the money!! SAMBAYOU BANDIT
I am running three… One for cranking, two for 24v TM. Only problem is I dont have enough time with them yet to say much that will help. I have had them for about 18 months. I hoped, when I decided to go this way, that their life would go beyond 2 years at least, and hoping for 3-4. So far, they work fine. But most of my batteries (perhaps excepting some Stingers I went through like bread) have lasted about 2 to 3 years max. If these make it beyond that, the cost might be justified. If they croak by the 3 year mark, I will probably use regular deep-cycles next time since the cost is so much lower…2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
We are not sold on Optima batteries for a hard core user and all out tournament angler. They have excellent life for what we term as a local tournament angler. Though we have found them to be not quite so for our needs on the Elite and All Out multiple day anglers. And they are putting these in a number of Elite boats now, which has given us a recent snap shot of the batteries. BCB
Thanks for the response. Im running the same boat. Have you noticed a difference in weight between the Optima batteries and the standard brands?
I have a brother running Optimas in his 06 Cougar FTD/250XS. I think he is running a 3 battery setup. He has been using them for several years without problems, under normal use. I have a 3 battery Optima setup in my 96 Eyra/175 Magnum EFI, but mine are dual purpose as it doesnt take as much juice to crank an EFI. I just started using them last summer when I bought the boat. Just remember your battery charger should be capable of charging AGM batteries.96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
I replaced two group-31 batts for my troller so there was a significant weight difference. I am not so sure that they produce all the “oomph” that the group-31 batts produced, but the 31s are pretty big and beyond pretty heavy. I sometimes fish two days in a row and charge overnight. I am not thinking that the AGMs last longer, but they dont seem to be running dry late in the afternoon, although I am not a pro and dont keep the troller on high all day long… Im mainly looking for an improvement in reliability more than anything else, whether that will pan out or not is not known so far, I can tell you more in a couple of years. 2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
optima to the best of my knowledge has change hands and there are issue. Are we concerned abouy weight or the best battery for the job.
both, weight and reliability!
schilster1, NorthStar is the only way to gain the weight pluses and reliability. Though they will lighten another area of your property ($$) in that process. Great stuff though! NorthStar Battery
