Dig This!Youre a 19 year old kid.Youre critically wounded and dying in the jungle in the Ia Drang Valley.November 11, 1965LZ X-ray , VietnamYour infantry unit is outnumbered 8-1 and the enemy fire is sointense, from 100 or 200 yards away, that your own Infantry Commander has ordered the MediVac helicoptersto stop coming in.Youre lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns and you know youre not getting out.Your family is 1/2 way around the world, 12,000 miles away, and youll never see them again. As the world starts to fade in and out, you know this is the day. Then – over the machine gun noise – you faintly hear that sound of a helicopter. You look up to see an unarmed Huey. But … it doesnt seem realbecause no Medi-Vac markings are on it.Ed Freeman is coming for you.Hes not Medi-Vac so its not his job, but hes flying his Huey downinto the machine gun fire anyway.Even after the Medi-Vacs were ordered not to come.Hes coming anyway. And he drops it in and sits there in the machine gun fire, as they load 2 or 3 of you on board. Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire to the doctors and nurses. And, he kept coming back !! 13 more times!!He took about 30 of you and your buddies out who would never have gotten out.Medal of Honor Recipient, Ed Freeman , died last Wednesday at the age of 80, in Boise , Idaho .May God Rest His Soul.I bet you didnt hear about this heros passing, but weve sure seen a whole bunchabout Michael Jackson (Ill bet Elvis is going to kick his ass!). . .Ed FreemanShame on the American media !!! Recession is when a neighbor loses his job. Depression is when you lose yours. Ronald Reagan
we have a lot in common. Thanks for sharing!
There are others similar that would be acceptable as well. He passed away a few months back and more like him are ending their eras. May we not forget their sacrifice. One passed our pc last month about a WWII veteran recently and that too was heart tugging. If we dont post these occasionally those younger than their 40s will not realize the heritage, and that history is slipping from their grasp. And for certain their children will probably not realize their grandparents sacrifices in Vietnam or their parents in Korea.
WHAT A STORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WHAT A BRAVE MAN…….GOD BLESS HIM…..
they will have never known them. We dont identify real heros these days so the youngest generation has no chance of knowing who they are. Somehow we have reached a point where we are even labeling some lawmakers as heros when in fact the only thing they ever did was rally a bunch of college age kids and convinced them somehow with their support they could save the world…..sad days ahead if we dont separate these real heros from those that somehow request the title.. In my state they just buried a soldier and the AP felt it was more important to publish the pictures of him dying even against the families and pentagons wishes……all for some press time…. They should have been writing stories of what a great person he was. This is not to mention the real issue which are these new ROE…….Which appear to be the major contributing factor to his death….20 years old I believe, now that is a real hero…
I recently had an aunt that passed away. She had two children, one of whom I had not seen since our days at Catholic High School and University of Arkansas at Little Rock. That was 1982. Victor and I grew up less than a block apart, with the rest of our cousins, 5 families within a 2 block radius. Victor came home to see his mother laid to rest. All the rest of us ever knew was that he had a important military job, according to his mother. Victor, turned out to be a Lt. Col. in the Army. Served 3 tours in Iraq, was wounded and received a silver cross(?). Walks with a limp, using a cane. Hearing loss. And turning 50 this year. He told my brother and I the stories of how lucky he had been to avoid snipers on at least two separate occasions. I had my 16 y/o son there, as he had obviously never met Victor. Aaron was very impressed with the uniform, the ribbons, the stories and the “military persona”- but most of all, because this was a family member. As I always do whenever I meet a veteran, I always tell them thanks for their service. This time, as I gave my cousin a handshake and hug, I told him thanks. His response, “Alan, I do this for you and your family, my family and all of our families.” May we never forget the sacrifices of generations of families. May we teach our off spring to embrace these sacrifices and never let go of our heritage.96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
My Dad served in WW1, he was in the 77th. division out of New York City, it was called the lost battalion . A movie was made of the battle at the Argon Forrest in Germany, it starred Rick Schroeder. My brothers in served in WW11 one was Army the other a Marine. My brother Nick was killed in action. I missed Vietnam but I always appreciated and respected any person who served our country in the armed forces weather they saw action or not they were there to defend our freedom. I make sure my children never for get what our family sacrificed and to honor our veterans both past and present. It is a privilege to be an American! GOD bless all our troops.
In World War 1 and 2 the average combat infantryman saw combat 45 days a year. Due to the invention of the helo Vietnam Vets saw an average of 285 days of combat a year. Today that number has grown even more because of the advancements in mechanized warfar. If this does not put things in perspective of what American Soldiers, Marines go through I do not know what will. God bless them to keep them strong and willing, for us.
A great post! I was saved by a guy in the central highlands of Nam in 1969. Never learned who he was. A lot of brave people like that in all wars. It is part of what makes us who we are as a nation. LOZman
This man was the wingman for Major Bruce Crandall, also a MOH recipient who just came to my school and explained his story. its really is awesome the things they did and all the lives those two saved
