I fish with a lot of different people in the Yuma Pro Am club I run as well as some of the other local club circuits I fish. One thing I have noticed is that a lot of people want to use the passenger windshield as a grab handle when they stand up. I finally just took it off to tried and encourage people to use the handle on the console instead. No luck. Now they reach across and grab the drivers console windshield when they stand up. I have to snug up the screws after almost every trip when I have an older guest in my boat, and every other trip with younger guests. Makes me want to put lettering across the inside of the windshield that says, “This is not a handle moron!” I dont think it would work. I do tell almost everybody that I would appreciate if they didnt use my windshield as a handle, but they still do it. Some use their fingertips after I say something like lifting themselves up with three fingers puts any less stress on it then just grabbing it. One of the ideas I have played with is putting a brush guard style grab rail all around and above the windshield and bolting it through into the console. Was thinking to use some stainless tube, and just have the local dune buggy shop bend it to shape. You could have a SS 1/2″ light tube bar custom made for that area. We dont, as there is a grab bar on most consoles, though you could.
There is a grab bar on my console too. People still use the windshield to lift themselves up. Sigh! I can weld it up myself, but my hydraulic bender does not have small enough radius jigs to bend it. It takes a different kind of bender to do it without kinking it anyway unless you pack the tube with sand first.–Bob La Londe Forums, Free Lures, Product Reviewswww.YumaBassMan.com CNC Molds N Stuffwww.CNCMOLDS.com
Even packing is not assured on large tubing, though works on smaller tubing fine.
I have done larger tube by packing and then heating, but you have to be careful to use clean dry sand or you have much more dangerous issues. The problem with heating is coloration. Area heating discoloration seems to be a lot worse then the HAZ from MIG welding. My did all his own 1″ (OD) stainless tubing for his big center console railing by just sand packing. Heh! I should ask him what kind of bending rig he has. Thanks for getting me thinking. I guess I could cut and weld and grind and polish, but that is pretty time consuming, and just doesnt look as good as a nice radius bend.–Bob La Londe Forums, Free Lures, Product Reviewswww.YumaBassMan.com CNC Molds N Stuffwww.CNCMOLDS.com
My friend has a label on the passenger console of his R boat that says “Thank you for not stepping on the seats” after a draw partner in the BWS decided it was better to use the seat instead of the step to get onto the back deck. It is the first thing you notice when sitting down… Maybe you could get a vinyl sign with an arrow pointing to the grab bar?
Yeah I like the label. Passenger seat is split too, but I got a guy who does upholstery pretty reasonably here. Bonus. I asked my dad how he bent his railing, and he told me, but he also has several pieces left over. He wet sand packed it and bent it in a conduit bender. 3/4 and 1 inch.–Bob La Londe Forums, Free Lures, Product Reviewswww.YumaBassMan.com CNC Molds N Stuffwww.CNCMOLDS.com
