Bass Cat uses 6″ setbacks for jack plates except the Detwiler hydraulic which measures 7 3/8″. You have no advantage or disadvantage.
Im considering upgrading my manual jack plate to a hydraulic one and Im wondering if the advantages warrant spending the money. Ive always had a manual jack and Im happy with the performance, but everyone I talk to who has a hydraulic say theyd never part with it. I know that lots of people run them for the hole shot in skinny water, but are there any other major benefits? Btw…-51 up here today with the windchill. Im jealous of all my friends to the South with open water, seriously considering a 20 hr drive to the OI!!! Thanks in advance for any input.
Be careful about your warranty. Those high setback plates may void your warranty. Check it out before doing it. KentKent Charles 2002 Pantera Classic & 200 Yamaha VMax
Ok thanks, Ill be sure and check it out.
Kent is right…if your Jag has a lifetime warranty anything bigger than an 8 inch jp will probably void the warranty. Also, you will need to specify that your boat needs a 6 bolt mounting pattern. BCB has stated that you will most likely not see any significant improvement with plates greater than 10″. I think your boat would be a maximum of 8″ setback to keep from voiding the warranty. Newer models can get a Bobs Hydraulic that would be bigger, but I think you can only max out to what is recommended for your year model.96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
Just got back from the shop & found out about the 6 bolt thang ! It does state on the hull that it is a lifetime warranty. I guess Im lookin for a 8 inch now. Anybody have any ideas ? If somebody from BCB is online, can you confirm what is the max on the JP. Thanks Guys, I appreciate it. Wyatt
8″ is the present suggested length. There is not a significant gain in adding another 2″ in offset. Overall we are dealing with 1/10ths.
Thanx !
Not trying to hijack Erps thread and his initial question but I have a question similar to smbass. This winter I would like to have a hydraulic jack plate installed on my 06 Classic. The reason is specifically for running the shallow flats in Lake St. Clair, thousands of acres of often 1.5-3 feet of depth, Smallie paradise. I assume that increased setback on a plate is primarily for increased speed, which I dont need. 76 with full tank and tourny ready is fast enough for me. I also assume that with increased setback comes increased initial stern drop at holeshot, albiet only temporary, which also doesnt suit my need for shallow water fishing either. Am I correct to assume that the most practical hydro jackplate for me would be one with the shortest possible setback? It seems to me that this would provide least amount of skag drag at holeshot and best shallow water versatility. And if my assumptions are correct, any recommendations on mfrs. for a short setback hydro jackplate. Thanks.
We would suggest a Detwiler on your rig. Folks on other boards will trash Deteiler, though the newer design has the 115 Merc trim pump for the activation. They have been good. The older pump model with stem bolts required(s) constant maintenance to prevent failures.
BCB, Thank you for the advice. I contacted Detwiler and got a price for a 6 All-in-one, not too awful bad. For the guys that run these any preferences on the control types? Im thinking the turn signal style, similar to pro trim, with the dash guage. Im a big fan of keeping my hands on the wheel. Thanks again and, once again, I apoligize for jumping Earps thread…hope he was done with it.
Just go to 8″ for the best results and clearances.
Bass Cat: What brand of Jack Plate do you use? The Marina I talked to said all they can get from their vendors are 6″ and 10″. If thats the case would 6″ be the best? I need one with the pump etc. in the jack plate so I dont have to try to squeeze it in the bilge.
Atlas or Detwiler ? ,,,,, BUT make sure you get the one built for BCB with the 6 bolt mounting.
The T H Marine Atlas is the one I was looking at but not sure of the 6″ or 10″ setback. Thinking 6″, does that sound right?
