on the end? What is the plate exactly? They make different length ends for grease guns, I have no problem getting to mine on an All in One plate… Are you lining your holes up with the outside hole on the plate in line with the grease fitting? They will match up at a certain heigth and it should be a straight through shot.
Just a stupid question, but what do you grease with and where on the Detwiler? I have one but have not done any specific maintenance for 3 yrs….96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
I was about to ask the same thing Jignpig. I didnt see any specific type of grease to use in the owners manual. How often do you grease them too?
Grease is added to the two cylinders in which the stainless support bars slide up and down in. These should be greased about once per year. 2 or 3 squirts a year should be good enough. As said above, the zerk fittings should be lined up with the hole in the side plates and just about any grease gun should work.
Phil, same bearing grease as axles on the older trailers? Where else can I use it…I have cable steering that leads into a reservoir with a zerk fitting? Maybe someone knows what kind of grease to use?Last edited by jignpig on May 7th, 2010, 3:54 pm, edited 1 time in total.96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
I have a Detwiler jackplate on my 07 Puma and I have had a similar issue in trying to grease the fitting on the port side of the boat. The problem that I have is the entire cylinder has rotated away from the hole that you would use and the zerk fitting now faces the center of the jackplate. I called Detwiler, and the gentleman I spoke with suggested that I grab a wrench or crows foot socket, put itand rotate the entire cylinder back to the original position. Im fairly mechanically inclined, but I cant see a way to get a wrench or crows foot socket in there to grab hold of the fitting to, not to mention that I dont think the zerk fitting could handle that pressure being applied on it. I had to drop the boat off for a warranty issue with my trim & tilt, so I asked the guy to look at it. Not sure if hell be able to figure it out.
BCB, what has been your pros experience with the Atlas jackplates this year? Im curious. I was going to buy a new Puma FTD from Bowden Marine, but the CFO squashed that for now. Will have to try to upgrade either next summer or 12. I have a 89 Pantera with a Evinrude XP150 and Dol-fin and 6 inch fixed jackplate right now. No idea of jackplate manufacturer.Anyway, I like the looks of the Atlas from an engineering design standpoint of where the sliding plate is held in the stationary bracket. Stresses look to be distributed more evenly through the polyer rods, plus isf those rods are a nylon copolymer with graphite or something like that, strength should not be an issue and lubrication for sliding the plate should not be an issue, especially in the water. That being said, I have no experience with it and dont know the design details of the hydraulic system on the Atlas. Ive seen a couple of youtube videos of a Atlas with a Merc 250 ProXS, but thats just one time video. Bobs plates look to have a good design, but the thin motor-mount plate going in those narrow channels in the jackplate bracket bug me for some reason.Hell, Im an Aggie project engineer, what the hell do I know about marine hydrodynamic engineering anyway? At least I know enough to want to eventually replace my BassCat with a more tricked-out newer model! Whoop!Last edited by CajunAg on May 20th, 2010, 3:14 am, edited 1 time in total.Your Signature …
We are very pleased with the present Detwiler plates other than the sending unit for the gauge. The Atlas the vote is still out on as we are not sure the situation for longevity. The pumps are supposed to be a pair up to another pump we use in the marine industry. Though we really dont know much more about it. BCB
Good stuff to know. Sounds like Detwiler sending unit has some refinements or instrument pickup points that could use refinement. How does BCB view the Bobs hydraulic plates? Im not sure how long I can hold out ad not buy a new Puma FTD, so I wat to make sure I get all my Iwannaknow questions researched and backed up with testimony before I get to that point. At least Im sure on the boat model, motor, type of prop, and most of the electronics. John Bowden had lots of good experience to relay from his staff who had actual fish time with all the stuff I was asking about. I really appreciated his time, even though the 18-hunnert pound BASScat got cut off my line by the CFO. His pricing was very fair and he was going to give me a trade-in for my 89 I was going to be happy with. Grumble(*%$%^$%$%*^$!!!Anyway, info on Bobs would be appreciated. I will search the board, too, for comments. Thanks BCB! Why my dad gave me his Pantera and ran off and bought a r@ng3$!! I do not kow. He rarely even takes the thing out of his garage….where he took the Pantera out quite a bit. That boat has been through some hairy 3 foot whitecap swells on Rayburn a few times where the oly way to get to safe harbor was to go from wavetop to wavetop. Those were some white-hair making hairy rides!! Even so, boat made it through each time with no troubles. Tough sumbit(|-| little 19 boat! I bet the Puma FTD is even badder on rough water, not that I would want to do repeat rides on those Rayburn swells! The hell with that!Your Signature …
We presently are not mounting Bobs on bass models. The only hydraulic option for Bass Cat is the Detwiler. BCB
OK. Sounds good. Yall put these thigs together and service em, so Ill trust your judgement. Whenever I can order y Puma FTD, Detwiler it will be. Thanks BCB!Your Signature …
I loosened mine up on both sides and rocked it back and forth a tiny bit at the prop and evened it out then tightened it up. Mike
onebgfish, Dont worry about it. The plates are not out of square, there is a funky thing going on with assembly and manufacturing. If you run a square down the side of the plate and figure the centerline, you will find the plate is square, though it was made that way. It has no effect on the boat or handling, though it really makes us all wonder whether or not it is cockeyed. It is not.
Thanks for the feedback,,I was curious when I noticed it.
