Jackplate on Puma Wide with 275 Verado – BCB and others

Cant get the right top end speed on my new (used) 06 Puma Wide with 275 Verado. Have raised the manual jackplate 1/4 in with neglible results. Wondering about prop (Bravo 28P 4 blade), but more about jackplate. It is a Slidemaster, but only gives about 3″ set back. (Couldnt even find one that small on their website ?) Wondering if there are any restrictions for the Puma with the 275 on jackplate size (6,8,10,12) – Will the transom mind the extra stress? I need this baby to fly (80+ mph at 6400 rpm), but Im only getting 70-72 GPS at 5600 rpm. (Hit 74.9 once but she chines bad by then) My next check per the Verado Owners board is to make sure the anti-ventilation plates are out of the water flow at cruise. Any Puma/Verado owners please help! Sorry for the rant!

Have someone who is schooled drive your rig, if you hit 74.9 we feel it is capable and would do nothing else yet. BCB

Also Verado steering is very touchy and fast, the hydraulic servos are working against each opposing force to balance the pressures, thus you have to be really soft on the steering wheel. You will learn, just dont overtrim and bump it up. Dont lift it up and let er rip. Take your time and float that nose up slowly with the trim. You do not need most of that trim range on a Verado to run. BCB

BJFisher,Did you check that hotfoot to see if you hitting the stop bolt?Good luck .

Yea, I loosened the stop bolt and lowered it a few threads, and the foot stopped where it was set previously. I was hoping Id find that that was keeping me from getting all the rpms. Now on to the next step. Im willing to put a bigger manual jp on and another prop if I need to. If I can get to the upper 70s with no chine Id be happy, as Im sure a lot of people would…. . Now the stable ride is at 68 gps. Its a great ride from the Puma and smooth performance from the Verado, but it should have a lot more top end.

BCB is it possible that the cable for the hotfoot is stopping full extension?

The throttle is all digital and there are no cables. The only thing that could restrict it is the pod on the hot foot loosened and twisted slightly, though you would notice play. We really would think someone needs to drive this boat with a little more seat time before you start moving things around. From the indications we are getting this is searching for a simple fix, and it may not require one.

BJ,I can tell you that my experience with a Puma/250 Pro XS has been similar to what BCB indicates. When I drive (poorly I might add), the boat gets loose around 76-77 and I got it up to 79 before I chickened out. My buddy drove and was at 81.4 without any problem. He thought there was more there, but only drove it the one time for a few minutes. Good Luck,John
