Jump Starting Off Trolling Battery

I have a 250 Pro XS and I know it requires 800 cca to start. I run a 31 AGM for cranking and have never had problems. I run 3 group 27 wet cell Interstates for trolling batteries and have never had issues with them. The Interstates have 600 cca and 160 rc, I carry jumper cables in boat just in case I run my cranking battery down. Never have (yet). My question is, Has anyone ever jumped a 250 off of a trolling battery with these specs? Im not sure it will do it? Just crossed my mind and thought Id ask. Thanks

They should do a fine job and just use a battery on either end of the trolling line. Not the jumper battery in the center of the loop.

It might be difficult. But if you use jumper cables, assuming your primary battery is not flat, just low, then it ought to work.

I have loaned my (little homemade) jumper cables out on the water a couple of times. Works well to get their motors started. As BCB says, use end trolling motor battery.

As long as you just jumping — not trying to run with the jumper cables connected — you can use any single battery. Start the motor then disconnect the cables. I have a battery selector switch on mine that I can turn the switch and select cranking battery, trolling battery, or both. Ive done this for a couple of reasons. First, if my cranking battery goes down, setting to both (battery 1 and battery 2) it will allow the outboard to “boost” off the trolling battery that “battery 2” is connected to (be sure and use the correct size cable for the ground connection to the cranking and the positive connection to the switch). In this instance, battery 2 for the switch must be the battery that carries the ground to the outboard so that the trolling motor ground and the cranking ground are common. Also, when set to both, it parallels the cranking with the trolling battery so I can use a 3 bank charger connected to each of the trolling batteries, set the switch to battery 1 and battery 2 and charge the paralled cranking also, allowing me to use a 3 bank charger to charge 4 batteries.John

I jump started a 150 Black Max I had on a boat, many years ago, from one of my trolling motor batteries. It messed up my trim motor for some reason. Had to have it replaced. The guy who worked on the engine back then, told me I somehow must have gotten 24 volts into it. He told me to disconnect the trolling motor batteries from each other before jump starting. Is that something to consider now?

can jump from + or – of any single battery. Only 12 V potential difference at that point.
