This is just a question that I have been wondering about. Why is the driver seat on a boat always on the right side instead of being on the left like our vehicles. Is there a specific purpose for this. Last edited by customcityjim on September 6th, 2016, 9:50 pm, edited 1 time in total.

My guess is to make it easier for the driver to comply with the navigation rules. Being on the right or starboard side will allow you to see when you should be giving way in a crossing situation. Of course very few bass boat owners actually know the rules of the road as evident by the countless times where I had right of way but the other boat failed to yield. I thought it might be to off set the weight lift for the torque produced by the motor.

Ive wondered about the center console bass boats. If you think about it, it does make sense being able to walk all the way around the exterior of the boat but the models that have this “feature” didnt last too long. Theres only a few I can think of actually..Nitro did one, the 911 I think, Triton did one in the early 2000s, and Allison I guess still makes theirs but Im not sure if thats the case or if it even qualifies as a bass boat. I did see a Z9 or something that was center console, but I dont guess it made it to market.I dont know why they didnt work out, but Id be curious to know what the thoughts are behind sticking with the “usual” layout and the reason these didnt work out. maybe since most other countries drive on the right side of the vehicle its more universal for boat driver to be on the right?
