I gotta say, I enjoy reading K-Pinks posts and commentary. Hmmm. Maybe a bid for the White House is in order!
Great article and so true. But dont expect gas prices to drop. We are using less gas in the USA then ever so what does the fuel companies do, ship it overseas to keep the prices up here and probably somewhat lower wherever its going. There was a good article in the business section last week explaining why prices havent dropped even though the refineries are producing more gas then is being consumed domestically. Because it is being exported overseas. Cant win when it comes to gas.

I really loved K-Pinks article. I am one of the older guys on the forum and can well remember the good old days and the cost of play things. He is spot on in his analogy of cost/salaries then to todays expensive toys. There is no comparison to the quality in boats, motors, and gear…..things are better to a great degree. And yes, my 1963 Chevy Apache rode like a truck in comparison to my King Ranch. However, there a lot of great things that were better then in a more simpler time and era. It is all part of living my friends….enjoy the days and remember the past.
Age might be a interesting poll. I get the feel that age range is mostly in the 35 to 65 but it would be interesting to really see some real stats. Put me down for 55 and not complaining one bit.
K dont pull no punches, and i see a tad of DBs influence in his articles, which is a great thing ! He just needs to take me fishing, and wed solve all the worlds problems,,,,,,,, and roast a few folks !
I agree those are intersting facts but i am 26 so i dont know about the good ole days what i do know is its hard to fish and pay for day care and other stuff and insurance of all sorts and other thing that didnt come out of that household income back in the day the fact is that our gov has tried so hard to make it a law for us to pay for stuff they believe is for our own good that we dont keep much of that income thses days and like i said i wasnt aournd then but that is my thoughts. Also we dont all have sponosors so let us have something to gripe about lol
Bass fishing today is fast becoming an elitist country club sport – Kshort fails to mention the difference in taxes between then and now, or the fact that a loaf of bread was 36 cents compared to the $2.90 I paid last week. Look at the poor fellow here on this board that moved to Kentucky that now has to pay a $10,000 “luxury” tax on his Jag. In 1977 a guy would carry maybe 5 sizes of mono. Today that same person would have to own a cougar to carry all the different lines and different Rods and Reels the “pros say we need. Better Quality ? Youre fooling yourself. Flyswatter bought a new Revo Spinning Reel a while back at the tune of $200 plus. Today he cant trust it to reel in a fish. He also had 3 spanking new rods snap without any undo stress. Do you really think Gel-Coat is the same today as it was 20 years ago. Do you really think the EPA hasnt forced changes in that industry that hasnt detracted from its quality. No, fishing today doesnt even resemble fishing 33 years ago. I live in Alabama and regularly fish lakes like Lay, Jordan and Eufala. Last year you could drive thru the boat ramp parking lots on a Sat.or Sun morning and see only a fraction of the vehicles that would have been present 6 months earlier all because of the price of gas. Tournament rosters arent filling up as they once were. Whats the reason for this ? Hunting Season ? Football Season? Too Hot? Too Cold ? No KShort, the only place where you truly got it right is your statement that the numbers can be massaged and manipulated to say whatever you want them to say. Its my take that when boats are at home and not on the water all because of the price of gas something is wrong. Dont tell me the cost of fishing hasnt gotten out of control. By the way Kevin. If you have a pick-up getting 20 plus mpg on the highway while towing a 20 bass rig I would really like to know what you are driving. In 1990 I had a Tracker TX17 carried 4-5 spinning rods that I used for bass fishing and crappie fishing. I was fishing virtually every weekend and having a lot more pure simple fun a lot cheaper then today. Today I have a 20 glass boat with a 250hp go fast engine, 15 high line rods all with revo premiers, a tackle box that would make bass pro shops envious and you know what? Its just not the fun it used to be. I have to hand it to you Kshort, youre right about one other thing. Its all about choices. Problem is, I (probably like so many others out there) allowed the fishing industry propaganda, (from the manufactures to the pros) influence my choices far too much. Massage the numbers all you like, then do a reality check
I think u r making his point? Do u need all that stuff? I took the theme of the article as two fold- u can get products at similar prices(fishing products) and our own desires for bigger and better have gotten us where we are. Go back to an xpress and ebay your stuff away and you can get back where u were. Just my take on article.C.O.D. Jr. III
