There are some entertaining youtube videos of folks shooting the Asian carp like skeet practice. Some even w/ bows; they shoot them right out of the air when they jump – crazy. Another invasive species that will have a negative impact on our beloved fisheries.
Kevin and Kerry experienced first had what has become commonplace along all the oxbows and river chutes north and south of Memphis. These fish were placed in commercial catfish ponds in AR years ago by the AR Game and Fish, and when the river flooded, as it always does–they got into the main river. Fast forward–and we have a monumental mess. The oxbow lakes like Tunica, Desoto, Whittington, and even Ferguson, are loaded with them. Some of the smaller honey-holes are barren of gamefish, as these monsters eat all the phytoplankton, leaving nothing for gamefish spawn and shad spawn to eat. A given unit of water will only support so much biomass–and these carp have filled that space. Nothing else can compete with them, or eat them. I was at an outdoor show, and got to talk to several noted river fishermen, the local game biologist, and this guy with an orange “T” on his cap, and the gist of the conversation was that the river and its lakes that we grew up on in the 70s 80 and 90s is gone forever. The balance of the ecosystem has been forever changed. A shocking survey on Tunica Cutoff three years ago turned up an average of 4# of bass per acre!! It used to take 25-30 pounds(5 fish) to win a summer tournament on the river lakes. Now–15 pounds is a monster sack. Glad Kevin has great memories of Chicot–cause Im afraid that is all that is left. Zebra mussels and snakeheads are small change compared to the impact of these carp. Mike Whitten/Germantown, TN
Dang Whitten, you sure paint a rosy picture of the future. Mojorig said these things were BAD news and I believe him. Hate to hear they have trashed all the lakes along the Mississippi. You guys had some fine fishing there when the levels were right. Sure theyll be up the Arkansas before long, probably all the way to Oklahoma.
For the record they are not and were not from AGFC. Introduced in 1973 from fish farmer private purchases.C.O.D. Jr. III
We really need a non native species act that regulates the importation, documentation and licensing of species that are imported and they also should be sterile other than for specified medical, or scientific uses and zoology.
KShort not that far away from where you got your win on the Mississippi. These things are taking over the Illinois River. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGWiaqGj … re=related
Great article, Kevin. I hate to hear about the carp being at Chicot. Its always been a favorite lake of mine, even though Ive only gotten to fish it for a couple of tournaments. It always had great fishing.
They ARE in the Arkansas river already. i saw some in LR last spring, and have seen more recently. Agree, we need strict laws and penalties for illegal importation/release of exotics. Wonder who we could talk to ? Ward, This isnt the only fish imported by a fish farmer that will cost this state millions ! The Arkansas river needs attention, both in the form of stocking, and habitat restoration. We need grass in backwaters, wood placed in sanctuary areas, and rock jetties and revetments cut to open backwaters,(as promised years ago in the ARNP with the USACOE, http://www.swl.usace.army.mil/projmgt/a … study.html ),and rockpiles made for fish and wildlife habitat. When are we going to wake up ? D.
The Silver Carp have been in the Arkansas River for a couple decades, just not previlent. The first one we ever knew of, noone knew what it was and was in one of our former dealerships deep freezes in Russelleville, Arkansas. It was caught just below the Dardanelle Lock and Dam on the Arkansas River in the late 1980s or early 90s, 1989 or so. They had it in the taxidermy freezer and it was probably about 10 or 12 pounds or more. Eventually someone IDd it from AGF.
