Got a tournament on Kentucky Lake in three weeks. We are putting in at Kentucky Dam. I have heard it is pretty hazardous to run this time of year… I have also heard that a lot of guys will run to Barkley. The questions I have are… Is the fishing tough up there this time of year? What baits do you guys like to fish on that lake in the fall and are there any good areas on that end of the lake to fish? Oh one more… Where is a good place to stay?
Im not a Kentucky native, but Ive fished Ky Lake several times. The best advice I can give you is this, when running, STAY IN THE MARKED CHANNELS. You can get into some very serious trouble by getting out of them when running at speed. Same is true for Barkley, although Ive only been into Barkley a few miles. Its an awesome place to fish.
If you fish down around Paris you can fish just about any way you want to and catch almost any species of fish. Parts of the lake are tough with traffic during the summer. The lake is lengthy and you need to let people know what part you want to fish. If your at the north end, consider Barkley also. Terrific place to use a jigging spoon. LOZman
When do you plan on coming this way to fish KY lake? I fish KY lake and know Barkley pretty well. You can read the fishing reports by Dave Stewart (he is the only one that kinda updates his this time of year) at http://www.kentuckylake.com go to the fishing reports. You could start with crankbaits, jigs, and shakey heads on the main lake points, and shakey heads on the ledges, I would look for the ledges with vegatation. I wouldnt discount a small creature bait carolina rigged on the ledges either, and Im thinking #7 shad rap around those points as well (you didnt here that from me) that should get you started. I believe it was stated on here to keep it between the channel markers, if this is your first time on KY lake make sure you know where your going….you could go from 50 to what in the wide world of sports just happened in about a second….when you get ready to make the trip send me a message I wouldnt mind taking my Cat out to fish a little Have a safe trip, I going to KY lake tommorrow, Ill post if I do any good.08 Bass Cat Pantera IV 08 Mercury 200HP OPTI 08 NISSAN TITAN CC 4×4 07 POLARIS OUTLAW 500
Weve been catch them last two weeks in one to two feet of water around grass using Baby 1-Minus and jerkbaits. Surprised us that fish were still that shallow.
There are some really nice smallmouth bass in there also. Ive caught a few nice ones on the land between the lakes side of the lake. This was just across the lake from Jonathon Creek and just a little north. But this was in April. Get a lake map and stay in the channel – watch the marker buoys. Best of luck!FISH ON!
Let me know when your coming and Ill try and help. I spend about 50-70 days a year on Ky Lake.
I am still learning that end of the lake, much prefer the Paris area. Id go shallow flats and or main points. The best reports youll get are from a guide named Dave Stewart he post them on line. You do need to run the channel markers, its pretty well marked. If you have GPS with a map youre good. My guess they are going to Barkley to beat the wind. The lower end of KY Lake can be a bear!!!No problem finding a place to stay, there is a lodge right there, Sportsman comes to mind, literally several motels as KY Dam Villiage is right off I-24. Im headed to Guntersville for the next two weekends, sorry I couldnt be more help. Check out the KY/iN club page on BBC. Best of luck
Mike you must be fishing the Weekend Series Regional. If so I am qualified for that one as well, along with the one in Mobile the week before. I qualified for both as a co-angler. Not sure I can make it to both but going to try. Maybe we will draw out together one day of the event.
Wish i was going ! I love that place, and no, you dont have to run very far to catch good fish !Recreational side, two or three coves down, docks, back of pockets, etc,,,,,,,Good luck !
all good information… THANK YOU!
Try a 1/4 oz rattle trap if they really shallow you can drag it off the bank so it dont spook them and if you go to Barkley take it easy out of the river channel you can run a ground if your not in a creek channel and watch for the birds.
