My old man has lived there most all his life and he has been smacking them on a suspending jerkbait worked S L O W on main channel points leading to historical spawning areas. Weather has been the determining factor though, very inconsistent but hey, what do you expect in early March in mid MO..
The water color is dirty and murky due to a lot of rain and run-off over the weekend. This morning, we got more snow, and temps in the low 20s. The surface water temp is 38-39 degrees in the mid-lake area from Hurricane Deck/Linn Creek up to the Glaize. The dam area is clearer, and that is where most are fishing. Dirty, cold water kills the jerkbait bite, and that is why it has been tough the past several weekends. I spent several hours over the weekend and never had a bite on the jerkbait in Linn Creek and Niangua mouth. I would like to meet the gentleman who is “smacking” them so I could learn his technique. There hasnt been a whole lot of “smacking” down here for sometime, now… You can check with me later in the week if you like. Gary Hollander
It sounds like you will be a few days before you learn if they are biting. Have a nice slide up there!
Of course Im not there to state the facts first hand, just passing on what dad has told me, he lives about .5 miles from the dam and maybe the water is cleaner there, cold indeed though.
I spent Sat. and Sun. from the 7mm to the dam. The water is not clear by any means. There is a few clear pockets of water and there was a boat on every point in that area. Just fish your favorite jerkbait very slow and if you catch a fish stay in that area. I had very few bites but the ones I had would be followed buy others. Dont set your expectations very high. Then every fish will be a bonus.
Thanks for all your feedback on this… Gary, if you get on the water tomorrow please give an update… Take care, Mike
Spent all day on the water Saturday and as Gary stated the mud line is from the new bridge to Warsaw. From the new bridge to the dam has better visibility but, is far from being clear. Im with Gary I could use some lessons from someone that is “smacking them” because the guys Im talking to, including myself , are finding the bite extremely tough. In the back of some of the creek coves I found 41 and 42 degree water but, for the most part 38 to 39 was the average. I had four bites in 8 hours hooked up on two and only one was a keeper that weighed about 3lbs. Patience is the key with a jerkbait or a jig. Good Luck and be safe! Glenn
Glenn, Are you planning on fishing the Wednesday Night Tournaments this year? I am looking for a partner, preferably with a Bass Cat, so we can take advantage of the Quest Events. My night-time vision is getting really bad, so I would prefer being a “passenger” at night, but can also take my rig if needed. If you are interested, or know someone else who might be, let me know… Gary Hollander
You bet Gary, I would enjoy fishing the Wed. nighters with you and I dont have a problem using my boat. Are you fishing the Heartland this weekend? Im leaving Thursday morning and fishing Thursday and Friday. Send me a personal email at ] and we can exchange numbers. Glenn
Any reports or suggestions from any of you who have been out in the last week on LOZ? I heard it was pretty tough this past weekend. Im heading down there and fishing on the 8th and 9th.
Mike, Marcus Sykora won the BFL there recently, 30Lbs. even for a Saturday/Sunday T. Just jigs and shallow docks from what I understand! BTW, Marcus used to run a BCB, whatever happed there?? Chuck
I was at LOZ all of last week. Many of the FLW guys stopped to ask questions. Shad are in the middle to back of the coves. 4 inch tubes in smoke/purple flake worked well in back of coves. eighth oz. jig head with 60 degree hook. All fish caught in first five ft. fall on front corner of docks. Docks with brush a plus but not necessary. If small front comes through switch to Eakins jig in the same place. Several five pounders caught this week. Second choice is ledges at 30 ft. near mouth of coves. 3/4 oz. football head in pb&j with trailer with some chartruese. If a large cold front comes through, this may be the better choice. All fish were caught around 13 mm. (Lodge of Four Seasons). I will be there all next week if you have more questions. LOZman P.S. Shallow crankbaits could start working soon, so give them a try also.
Marcus we understand was interested in large initial incentive monies offered by another company on the Weekend Series. Though the draw in those events did not often make the minimum required participation for that incentive, nor qould it under the Double Up Quest program. There are no brass rings, just a few folks who can catch them and make enough on incentives. Which is why Quest is tailored to be able to enjoin with smaller events and not focused totally on large scale events. Though Marcus and Bill also did well on the Nightly Series out of PB2 as well. Which is the focus of Quest. Such as CABA, Fishn Stuff, and more. BCB
Speaking of LOZ, what is the status of Munganast as a BassCat dealer? I saw Tracker signs here last week.
The big banner has been gone for awhile. Probably trying to tap into the pontoon boat market. Cheaper then a 33 ft deep -V Formula. I think the average size on the lake is 33 ft now, but you can go anywhere with a toon. LOZ is a crazy place, but still my favorite place to fish. I did ok on on Strike King white tube and black Larry Nixon buzz bait. I use star-flash skirts. We have a dock/sea-wall out front where I aways catch a couple of bass in 44 ft of water.
