Hey everyone Im looking for some advice. Me and family are headed to Denison Tx this weekend to visit the in laws and I decided to take the cat. Ive never been on lake Texoma and was trying to figure out the best place to launch on the Texas side of the lake. I purchased some maps and have been studying them for a couple of days trying to formulate a game plan. Also any suggestions on where to start, planning on sticking to largemouth or smallmouth. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Would really like to get my two sons some smallmouth if we can find em.
I fished a Honey Hole team championship on Texoma many years back. We prefished for 2 days and only caught dinks / Smallmouth. First day of tourny we decide to punt!! Hit points with Big crankbaits. found one point with lone tall pine laydown and caught a limit wound up with almost 17 lbs and was in second place. we were happy happy happy. Second day went to same place. first cast hooked up with big fish that turned out to be about a 8lbs striper we proceded to catch one striper after another. They had moved in and ran the bass off I guess? We managed to scrach up 3 dinks that day off boat docks with worms. droped to 7th place. Not much cover in the lake. Plenty deep and can get rough thats for sure. Others were catching fish on the rocks at the dam there is a big flat on the left looking at the dam. It looked like a parking lot durring the tourney. Have not been back since and am hoping I do not have to. Good Luck.
You could form a pretty large club of people who have had the same experiences at Texoma, myself included. That lake is well known for the fish doing something different every day.
I live in Oklahoma but have stayed in Denison several times and put in just west of the dam. Nice wide ramp and good parking. YMMV
I live on texoma the dam ramp is a really good ramp just no courtesy dock, as far as the fishing goes I have struggled my last two tournaments. My partner caught a four pound small mouth in our last tournament about 2 weeks ago on a dock. The lake is way up for what it has been the last 3 years, we caught fish swimming a jig with a shad like trailer only on white foam docks. Dont waste your time on the black plastic docks 3 to 9 ft is where we caught them. Our tournament season is over so go to soldier creek, buncombe, Alberta and in the mineral arm on the Texas side. If you get up early go to sunset cove and fish the Lilly pads with a frog, your boys will have a ball if they are in there. Remember you have to have a texoma license or a Oklahoma and a Texas license on this lake.
I go from Illinois to Texoma a lot. Stop off at Wally World and get an AID Lake Texoma map…in the fishing supply area…they are about 6.50…gives you all the public and pay ramps. Dont forget the Texoma permit. 12 bucks at Wally World too….If you see a bunch of sea gulls dropping in the water…toss a spoon or a six inch sassy shad and hold on…stripers can really fight,,,but so can the bass.
Launch at Eisenhower state park cost $5 its right by the dam. If you want small mouth cover water they seem to stack up and they like that end of the lake so no need to travel far. Stripers are hitting top water 1st thing in the morning throw anything and there are good ones. Pick up a texoma license its $12 good for a year.
Thanks everyone thats the info I was needing. Cant wait to get out there and try it out. Hopefully we can find a few fish.
Hey, let us know how you did and what you caught
I put in at Eisenhower before daylight and caught a smallmouth and a spot by daylight. We went to Preston point and caught a smallmouth and a ton of sandbass lol couldnt resist kids ate it up along with a striper. Went back to Eisenhower and caught a good smallmouth. Had fun considering I was lost all day lol. Heading out in the morning gonna try out soldier creek. Thanks again everyone. Big change from east Texas lakes with weeds and trees lol.
