I have an 07 Puma. When I go to launch my boat, as it is beginning to slide down the trailer bunks, the Hanbys protection hits the spare tire. (Lower back of tire on sidewall)Is there a remedy for this??I have already ruined one spare tire, chords damaged, and tire blew out on me over the winter.I have been thinking of putting a piece of plywood over the tire to protect it.
Please dont take this as an insult to your boating intelligence. I am only offering advise, not bashing in any way. Try to not back your trailer in so deep. If you keep it a little shallower and use just a little outboard motor power to back it off of the trailer it wont hit the spare tire. Atleast not so hard as to mess your spare up. It will take some getting used to to judge the depth you need to back it in. Most of the time this issue is from using very steep boat ramps. If you use a steep ramp regularly please dont back your boat in enough for it to just slide off of the bunks. This is what will damage your spare tire. If you use ramps with a very gradual angle you can back it in far enough for the boat to float off with no issues. Give this a try and I think youll find it will help out. I know buying a new spare is not a good option. Tires are not very cheap now adays. Good luck and I hope it works for you. Chris CoupelPaulina, La.Chris CoupelPaulina, La.
I HAVE MINE MOUNTED LIKE THE RANGER SPARE…LOVE IT…VERY EASY TO MOUNT…BASSCAT BUILT ME THE MOUNTING BRACKET……..I CANT DO PICTURES DUE TO IGNORANCE….SAM RUSH TALKED ME INTO THIS.HE HAS ONE MOUNTED AND CANPROBABLY SEND YOU A PHOTO……ASK HIM……..ROBIN
Theres another way to off load but you need the vehicle driver to understand what you want to do. You can back off at a lot of momentum and the boat driver be in reverse as well. The momentum will get your hull away from the spare. Newer models are greatly improved with a roller forward to help prevent contact.
You can block up the front edge of the spare tire and gain some angle on the tire. Also pay attn. to Shaps suggestion and this is usually the common factor.
I appreciate the help.Have tried slow launching with boat backing off of trailer on big motor, still some drop down.Have thought about the other option, of mounting tire on main frame back near trailer tires.Would appreciate if Sam would send me some photos. Thanks again Bass Cat family.
PLOWCAT,THE SPARE ON THE SIDE IS EASY AND ALSO LOOKS GOOD….IF YOUHAVE A FLAT,YOU DONT HAVE TO CRAWL AROUND UNDER THE BOAT TO GETTO THE SPARE.ITS RIGHT THERE… IT IS NOT IN THE WAY OF ANYTHING….SOME SAYYOU CANT CLEAN BEHIND IT,THATS NOT TRUE.YOU HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM TO DO ANYTHING YOU NEED TOO…..WRITE TO SAM RUSH ON THE WEBSITE AND ASK HIM TOSEND YOU PHOTOS…..ALSO BASSCAT DID A SUPER JOB OF MAKING MINE.VERY EASYTO INSTALL FOR A DUMMY LIKE ME, AND THAT SAYS ALOT…….ALSO SUPER STURDY../ROBIN

Im not insulted by your remarks, Shap from LA. I do appreciate all the help and infoIm kind of a novice to the bass boat world, and the Puma was my choice. (at 63 years of age)Have thought a lot about the spare tire assembly which Tideman mentioned.Have seen a few around and feel this is the route to travel.Who needs to crawl around and tug and pull to get their spare tire out.I already have a spare tire but just NOT usable as a tire replacement. (Get the idea)
If ya have a 4 prop blade on your engine, mine was mercury and the prop was a “Trophy”, I got rid of that piece of junk and put a fury prop on my engine. After that was done,ALL my loading of my boat onto my trailer issues were gone. My issue was yours, I had to back the trailer down way to far to get the boat on the trailer. Replacing that prop took care of all my issues. Not only did I have this issue but a couple of friends of mine also that had 07 pumas. Also doing this improved that boats performance also. Why that prop was on there originally,I have no idea. Hope it helps.Last edited by z8pp3r on August 22nd, 2012, 9:18 am, edited 1 time in total.
Here is what I made up to solve this problem I had too I have since added a strip down the center of plastic to protect against the aluminum/boat contact the only part that hits if it does happen is the tie down ring and slide down the plastic (cutting board type)
Would prefer the verticle mount on spare myself. Mine is mounted under bow and always puddles water on the wheel and leaves spots on it. Dont like spots on my wheels or crawling around on my stiff old knees to keep it clean. Gonna order spare tire cover soon but even then– I am rather anal bout my boat and will have to take if off often just to check and see if a water spot is hiding from me. LOL Please post pic of verticle mount spare? Would really like to have verticle mount spare and have cover made to match boat cover with BCB logo. Anybody got this setup??
