Good post, we all need to remember our life jackets. A while back, I went and got one of the mustang hydrostatic auto inflatable jackets and it goes on when I leave the dock and generally does not come off until I get back. I decided you are probably as at much risk while fishing as you are while moving. I will admit I have fallen in while fishing, but fortunately never have while under power. I got to studying what if you hit your head or otherwise get hurt or just disoriented, things could end badly. I know some make the argument that the auto vests dont offer any impact protection and while that is true, most of us pull regular life jackets off when we stop and thus are unprotected while fishing. However, those auto vests are comfortable enough to wear all the time. I do realize there is a slight possiblity the thing might not go off, however I will make my choice and know my risk and feel better that I have a jacket on all the time. One laying in the seat sure is not going to help when you are looking up at the boat. The auto vest does have a couple of added benefits, it is a bright color when open and it provides a lot more bouyancy than standard jackets. Everyone has to decide for themselves. Hopefully we all make the right choice for ourselves.Last edited by Fisherman74 on January 15th, 2009, 8:41 pm, edited 2 times in total.
I have been lucky so far and have not fallen in. I bought a world class SOSpenders auto vest because I am getting older and am not as agile. There is a warning for the vest which says it may not fully inflate in cold weather. For that reason I do not wear it during the winter and use the older style flotation. Just a word of warning to read the info on your auto vest. LOZman
I wear a SOSpenders when I fish during the winter and if I am fishing by myself any other time.
I am now one that has gone in. Sitting in the back of my buddys Cougar in my seat out of my boat as I put a Springfield hydraulic pedistal on it for the comfort of my bad knees. We were on Fayette County just a catching them! When I set the hook on another Carolina rig fish my post breaks about 2 inches from the bottom and I fall backwards to the deck which came as a great shock to me, but when I noticed my legs and feet continue on over my head and I promptly went into the lake head first! As I came up I still couldnt believe I was in the lake and yet there I was. Got my rod to my partner which still had the fish on and reeled it in and released it as I moved to the back of the boat to try out that new E ladder. So I have now ordered a ski ladder for my boat and if you think you are safe sitting down Im here to tell you nope you are not! After changing out of my wet clothes and into my BCB Frogg Toggs we fished until evening and caught fish and laughed about the experience. Now on a serious note had I been on a Sam Rayburn size lake and fishing by myself (which I do) and with freezing temps (air and water) and in my boat the out come might have been different. This is event has changed the way I think about water safety while Im fishing hence the new ladder. Lets just be careful out there! Been There, Done That! GeorgeGeorge
Thanks BCB, I recieved mine today well worth the wait.
Yes, they shipped out 74 vest in one day, and more the next. Busy day for them catching up!
Just curious what are there color options? misr12
misr12 wrote: Just curious what are there color options? misr12 Looks like you can get it in any color you want…….as long as you want Red & Black http://www.basscatstore.com/stearnscompetitorvest.aspx
Got mine yesterday.
This is the best life vest I have ever owned. I have had mine for 2 years and would not trade it for any other type.
The only color available is the Red & Black combination. The volumes we sell necessitated minimizing colors to be able to purchase them. The reason Red & Black was chosen is the volume of Red to other colors was 9 to 1.
Just got back from the Turks & Caicos Islands for spring break with the family. My neighbor caught me this morning at 7am in the driveway. She had two boxes for me. One contained my new LONG sleeve cat shirt and the other big box had 2 of my new BAD AZZ life jackets !!!!!!!!! Man its good to be HOME !!!!!!! Cant wait to showem off !!!! They look great for those of you waiting on your new arrivals.
I got 2 a couple weeks ago. Bout the same as the last. I got xxl and they are little big, but when I do the buckles and tighten them down its snug with room to go even more. I got them to wear in the winter. I can wear several layers and they fit great. Love em!
Exactly what Joey said. Im 62″ and wear a XXL shirt so I got a XXL life jacket. It is a little big but perfect for wearing in this cooler weather with layers of clothing underneath. I just bought a regular XL for a partner or for later in the year.Jim EbarbMany, LA (Toledo Bend Lake)2004 Cougar/ 225 OptimaxHumminbird Helix 12 Chirp SI on BalzOut Mount at bowLowrance HDS 7 at bowHumminbird Helix 12 Mega SI on Ram Mount at ConsoleLowrance HDS 8 in dash at console
