Anyone using a lithium starting battery? Comments pro or con?

The factory opinion internal is not to be shared. They feel there are some good ones, some bad ones and some in between.

They do strongly (very strong) suggest the new Power Pole Charge when using Lithium.

And of course that charge unit is hard to come by under CoVid.

I looked at buying one earlier this spring and decided against it. I bought the X2 from Batteries Plus. I did get lithium’s for my 36V trolling motor. I know a couple people that use lithium for their starting battery and haven’t had any issues but one of the guys is the one that talked me out of it.

Follow what Mercury and BCB “recommends” …. use the 31AGM for your cranking battery. I have 2-36V Lithium Pro’s (Overkill) and a Power Pole charger, with the 31AGM. The Power Pole charger is simply the best charger I have ever owned. Simple set up, simple to monitor battery conditions and does everything it advertises it will do. Also a safety, piece of mind aspect in that you always have a emergency start button to employ if something happens on the water where your batteries become fully discharged. The likelihood of that being needed is slim to none considering how the charger works to begin with.

On the 2 stroke Mercury DFIs it was not a problem. The new 4 Strokes require an AGM. I use the Northstar 31 to crank. I just bought the boat and it has 2 of that same battery for the trolling motor. Once they die, I will go with a lithium again for the TM only!

The problem with using lithium for cranking is that its BMS (battery management system) can disconnect the battery when it sees excess voltage produced during peak power while accelerating. This can damage the charging system on most modern outboards. Best to follow the battery recommendation from your outboard manufacturer. I know that Don Weed on the Mercury forum on BBC says that for the new four strokes that recommend AGM, if you use lithium and have a problem caused or contributed by using the incorrect battery, under warranty, your claim could be denied. Living in a cold climate and charging in temps around freezing in the fall can also be a problem with lithium
