I seen a post here about someone looking for and older opti that people replied too and got me thinking I would love to upgrade my 2.5L 200hp EFI to a 3.0l anyone out there know of a NOS 3.0L 200hp EFI or a low hour one.
Those are very hard to get a hold of these days. They are such a strong and dependable motor that people dont want to let go of them. I would love to have one on my Classic as well. It just doesnt make good sense to me though until something bad happens to my 2.5 liter. Once it gives out I will more than likely upgrade to an optimax. Good luck in your search. I have one on my PIII and man does it fly. I wouldnt trade it for two Optis. Fuel mileage isnt bad either if you watch how you run it. Good luck in your search for one Topwater.
Wonder why somethings so good is like trying to find Hens Teeth you would think they would make a million of them Must be the fuel economy. Everything I hear about a 3.0L 200hp EFI is nothing but good stuff and the motor is super strong through all ranges. you would think 200hp is 200hp but as they say there is no replacement for displacement
The 3.0 was a very short time project, as the engine was released in the 2003 Model Year and ended around 2005 or so. It was/is a beast of an engine and there were very few of these in existence. The engine produced massive torque and mid range, and a top end. Though fuel mileage was not good on this engine in comparison to the Optimax series. These are fuel consumers, and even backed off the throttle are not miserly in comparison. BCB
I was a Yamaha fan forever and still am. However, once I saw a PIV I knew I would be switching from a Ranger to a Basscat. I searched high and low and could not find a PIV with a Yamaha. I was open to Merc, but no way would I consider a Opti at the time (05). One day I was searching the web and I found a guy that needed to unload his PIV fast. The boat was loaded and had a Merc EFI 3.0L on the back and after a few calls I bought the boat. I absolutely love the boat and will never be in anything but a cat. But the biggest surprise was the 3.0L – Oh My God. This thing is a beast! I would not trade it for the world – the hole shot, mid range and top end are unreal. The thing is a pit bull on steroids and the day it craps the bed I will be in absolute tears. The only complaint is oil. If you do not put the hammer down the gas mileage is not that bad, but this thing sucks down the oil – wow! But the all the pluses out weigh the oil issue. Good luck in your search!
I got a lead on a NEW one but it not cheap, I am strongly thinking about it though. Now its down to that>> I want it, do I really need it, but I want it thing lol lol , Of course eventually I would have to sell my 99 2.5l 200 EFI with 250hrs on it and thats some money back lol lol lol. I love my 98 PII and its like new still more like spotless, I never leave the launch without it getting wiped down and pledged no matter how tired I am and not that it runs bad but as Tim Allen would say MORE POWER lol lol
That Merc 200 3.0 is indeed a beast! A member in our Club has one on the back of his PIV, and it growls! Dont discount Yamahas V-Max 3.1 ltr 200, they have a lot of low-end grunt too! Thank goodness I have one on the back of my P-III as it helps get my tail heavy boat on plane quite nicely, esp with a 24 Tempest prop.
