I have a friend that is looking to sell his boat and is very desperate for the money. Since I cant stand the fact that I am boatless, I am considering buying it. I will admit that it is not a Cat and since I only plan on being in it for about 1 year anyway I am willing to lower my standards to help out my very good friend. My question is this. The boat is rigged with a 2000 model 225 Optimax. My friend is the original owner of both the motor and boat and the engine has never given him any problems. He is a maintenance freak and I know that he has taken very good care of the mechanical side of the boat. My problem is that this engine has 600+ hours on it. I am wondering if someone that has some knowledge about this engine can tell me if I should be wary of it because of the hours or buy it and take my chances. The price of the rig is a steal and as long as I dont pour a pile of money into it, The resale on it in about a year will be significantly higher than what I am paying. Please dont tear me up on here because I am straying! LOL!!! My buddy is a very good friend and I really want to help him out. When this boat is sold it will be back in a Cat for me. Thanks. Jason

Just be sure that hte temperature is warming up on that year model Opti. There was an issue with injectors and temperatures on this year model. They would sometimes blow a power head, though this one sounds reasonably reliable. There may be some Mercury fixes for this, though we are not sure ourselves. We would burn a wee bit of oil in the fuel ourselves to offset any potential powerhead issues on lubrication or lean burn. Otherwise we have no knowledge of issues. BCB

Sounds like you are in a very good place. You are able to help a friend who is giving you a great price, and you know the entire history of the engine and the maintenance it has received. It really doesnt get much better than that. 600 hours is not alot of hours considering the year of the engine, especially if it has been well cared for. On the other hand, 600 hours is a whole lot of hours if the engine was not broken in correctly or maintained appropriately. I would probably buy the boat if I was in the market for a used boat and enjoy it for a year or two. Keep your gas fresh, run good oil, and have the engine checked out by a good mechanic. Thanks for the feedback. Yes Corky I am in a fortunate place. I have knowledge of something that most buyers dont have when they buy a used boat. I am really more interested in helping my friend than I am anything else. It goes against my good nature to buy a “R” boat but in this case I think we will both win out. BCB I am almost certain that my friend told me that he had made some injector upgrades a few years back at the dealers suggestion but I may be wrong on that. The only repair that I know of that has been made on this engine was a new lower unit. He hit a stump near Jackson Hill and damaged it. That was in 2002 and he has not had a problem since.
