Been expecting problems with this 08 250 pro xs after everything I heard and it did not take long. 12 hours on the motor and it will not get on plane this morning at a tourney. Sucks having a new boat that will no go. Sure glad got the 36 volt trolling motor saved the day for a second place but I have no confidence in this motor. I do miss the yammie I had on my skeeter. Nine years and no problems. This really sucks!!
Before you put the gun to your head maybe you can help us help you. With no info as to what the symptoms are then help will be little forthcoming. More than likely your planing problem is as simple as adjusting the PVS plugs in the hub of the Mercury prop. If the engine bogs down as it comes out of the hole then this is your problem. Good luck! Maybe Pa Pa Bass Cat below will trade you his Yamaha for your Mercury!
Jim, Who will be servicing it for the issue?
If it was plaining out before and now the outside temps are much higher maybe the pvs. What prop? More than likely its a coil. They are known for causing this same problem. Could be a plug also with that number of hours. Are you using ethanol fuel, and if so has the boat set for a long period with out marine stabil or one of the other fuel preservatives? Look at the bright side its under warranty. Dont get discouraged all of the “big three” motors have their problems these days. Sheff
Will be taking it to Omaha Marine where I bought it on Monday. It would always run a bit rough when you first start it but ease the gas and it would run fine. I thought it was cold blooded at first and I always let it warm up but now the water is in the 70s so I wanted to take it in anyway and now I have to. Had it down to Table Rock few weeks back and it ran fine and had it up to 72 mph. Now it will not even load on the trailer. Im sure they will get it fixed but after just a few hours on it it is disappointing since my yammie was trouble free. I know this stuff happens but Il just never trust this engine like I did my last one.
Sheff is right, we have seen issue with all three lately. Our volume of engines on BCB Models is much higher with Mercury at somewhere around 70 to 90% of product, though we are seeing something from each. BCBLast edited by Bass Cat Boats on June 7th, 2009, 5:53 pm, edited 1 time in total.
You can bet its a bad coil. I had one go out Friday. The 08s are having tons of coil failures. Mercury is working with their vender and have experimental coils on several of the pros boats that are showing promising results.
+1 on sounds like the symptoms of a bad coil. My 2008 250 Pro-XS has been down for a week waiting on a new coil. I am scared to death to make a 20-mile run in my boat because of these coil problems.
start the motor and for a few minutes? I am noticing just a slight stutter in mine lately at idle. No issue running smooth performance above idle but trying to keep my ear on it.. I seem to have an acute awareness of change in mechanical things and just today on the lake I was wondering and now reading this thread makes me wonder what the first signs of a coil issue are? Is it idle or is it breaking down under load? Thanks
it was running a little rough from day one and was going to take it in to check. I agree with Mark, I will be nervouse in the future making a run with this motor. Really frustrating have a 250 motor that cant even put the boat on the trailer.
