I have an 03 cougar with 250 XS the prop shaft has a slight bit of play up and down. Is this ok or is it like a pinion shaft on a differential where any play is bad?
Cant believe up and down is ok? Have only looked up close however at housing and gears and bearings on brp. In and out I can see but up and down seems bad?C.O.D. Jr. III
Up and down is bad!!a little in and out end play is ok but up and down means a carrier bearing is bad usually. Drain the lower unit into something clean and checkfor metal shavings with a magnet.Any steel is usually bad.Johnny
In and out is OK as mentioned above. Anything else is probably going to fail soon. Rebuilding a gear case is pretty easy if you have the right tools. If you dont have the tools youre better off letting someone else do it.
