Lowrance 28 in Dash or 38 Mounted Outside Dash

Im going to upgrade the electronics in my 2004 PIV. Im looking at the 28 or 38 series Lowrance units. The 28 will fit flush in the dash but Ive been told the 38 series wont fit. Id really like the 38 because of the extra size of the screen but Im unsure exactly how I could mount it in the factory location with a external mount. Has any body done this and if possibe does anyone have any pictures of how it can be done. I can fill the hole where my old unit came out of with a alum or fiberglass plate. Id like to keep it in the factory location just outside the dash as close as possible.

Im sure Judd will be along soon and will show you how he mounted his. He used a ram mount mounted to the dash instead of in-dash mounting the unit. So if you make a cover plate to cover the existing hole, you can ram mount the 38 off of the cover plate. Brian Hash

We have recessed them into the dash for the Elite Staff, though it is a major pain, and we do not do it for retail because of the look. They are a little rough on that install. The RAM mount works well, though if you want to recess it yourself it can be done, and works OK?

Just to add my $.02 on this thread, I just recently had to face this choice with my 08 FTD. I elected to go with the LCX 28 HD at the console, and mount the 38 unit up front, on a RAM mount. After spending some time in the boat this weekend, Im very happy that I made that choice. The 28 is plenty big enough for me to see clearly at the console, BUT the larger screen of the 38 is outstanding at the bow, with a much easier screen to see than the 520 unit I had last year. A big screen up front is far more useful to me there, since I spend much more time there, fishing. Just my thoughts, and how it worked out for me. Mike Whitten/Germantown, TN

So BCB you are saying that the 38 series will fit its just a little harder to flush mount. Also who could I talk to about installing this unit in the dash. If it can be done Im pretty sure I can do it but Id like an idea of what I might run into as far as problems.

Here is how my 997 is mounted. The ram mounts have actually grown on me (this is the 2nd one and wont be my last). I think I actually like it better than the flush mounts honestly…I know it isnt cost effective for BCB to mount all of them on a ram mount but when it comes time replace all these units the holes in the dashes may or may not line up causing problems for future owners. It is nice to have the option to do either though. It is also to be able to position the sidefinding units so your partner can see them. Good luck with whatever you decide, I dont think there is a wrong way but you have options. Judd Lasiter

On my 04 FTD, I have a Globalmap 6000 flush mounted and then have a X19 on the rail using the small ram mount and the rail mount that they make for it. I havent had any problems with it moving around while under power and best part was I didnt have to drill any holes. I have the same small ball mount on my front unit as well and it doesnt work as well. It seems to vibrate loose up at the front of the boat.
