I am thinking of adding gps unit to boat,LMS-522c. Has anyone have any comments on this unit? Does the internal antenna work good?

My neighbor has this model. At first he thought it was a piece of junk, but has changed his mind since getting the 2008 Navionics Hot Spot SD card for it. The internal antenna is ok, but not the greatest. It tends to loose and acquire its position fairly frequently at least it does when Im running the TM. By frequently, Im talking about once every hour or so. Other than that, its been great with the Navionics chip to show the GPS map detail in high def.

Where do you plan to mount the unit? You want be happy at all with the internal antenna in the dash. Buy a unit with the external antenna and you want have any problems no matter where the unit is mounted. 520 c is the same unit with an external antenna. I have the 522 in dash on the new Sabre FTD I am waiting to get finished. I just got back from helping someone install a 522 and they were installing an external ant. I asked why if the unit had an internal and got the same reply as above. I guess I need to go ahead and add the ext ant to Sherms “to do” list on my boat. I fish all over the place and will not be happy the first time I am running a secondary channel and it loses signal! Did I mention I am foaming at the mouth to get back on the water LOL.

John, From everything I have read, the internal GPS receiver should NOT be mounted in the dash. Definitely go with an external receiver if you are doing this. Internal GPS units work great when they are mounted with only a slight angle back and away from any obstructions, like on the side console. I have used the internal GPS for fishing from the bow and had to move it to the side of the console because it would lose signal when tilted back too far. good luck with your FTD. Brian

My 522i C works great on a ram mount drivers side and spins nicely for me to see it from the front as well. Have had no issues of mine losing signal.C.O.D. Jr. III
